Trustee: CUESA (Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture)
San Francisco/San Francisco, CA
Why are you interested in becoming a Trustee?
By becoming a trustee we can help direct needed funding to our network of producers who sell at our farmers market, allowing them to fund projects to make their businesses more sustainable.
What is the mission of your organization?
Our mission is to cultivate a sustainable food system through the operation of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market (supporting small local sustainable food producers) and its education programs.
In the past, how effective have you been in achieving this mission?
We are consistently cited as one of the very top farmers markets in the nation based on quality and diversity of products, and our sellers report that our market, on average, generates more than 25% of their total annual revenue (up to 100% for a few sellers). Our education programs serve as models for other organizations, and currently reach over 9,000 annually (plus another 14,000 subscribe to our weekly eletter).
Do you belong to any organizational networks -- nationally, regionally, or locally? If yes, please list.
We participate in a variety of farmers market coalitions and in local urban ag organizations.
How will you decide who to endorse as a borrower? What due diligence will you conduct?
Our market sellers will send us a proposal, which will be screened first by staff, and then ultimately must be approved by our Market Policy Committee or Executive Committee, before we endorse them. The proposal must include a description of what the funds are for, an explanation of how it will help them make their businesses more sustainable (per our mission), and their plan for how they will repay the loan. We will also only endorse those of our sellers who have a proven history of paying us their farmers market fees in a timely manner.
How do you plan to support the borrower, both before and after the loan is disbursed?
We are able to help promote their project in our e-letter (to drive readers to the Kiva Zip site for their project). We can direct them to peers or others in our networks for guidance or support as requested.
How will you help us ensure that the loans you endorse have a significant and positive social impact?
In support of our mission and bigger vision of building a more sustainable food system, we will only endorse projects that help our community of sellers become more sustainable, based on the best practices we have described in our Sustainability Frameworks (http://www.cuesa.org/learn/sustainability/sustainable-food).
