Why are you interested in becoming a Trustee?
We work with immigrants from around the world who face many challenges in starting businesses in the US. The most common challenge is access to finance and we strongly believe that Kiva Zip will be a great option. Based on our experience, our entrepreneur clients are strong candidates for credit and we have no doubt in their ability to repay every cent borrowed.
What is the mission of your organization?
The Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians connects newly arrived individuals from around the world with the economic opportunities that they need to succeed in the Philadelphia region. We believe that a steady influx of new customers, workers and entrepreneurs can reinvigorate Pennsylvania’s aging population, renew its neighborhoods, and re-energize our economy. By making Pennsylvania a magnet for immigrants, we will become a more vibrant, more creative, and more dynamic competitor in today’s global economy.
In the past, how effective have you been in achieving this mission?
Since opening our doors in 2003, we have assisted more than 10,000 people from over 140 countries. We measure ourselves by how many businesses we assist to become successful and contribute to our region's economy and how many people we place in employment. For example, to date we have placed 1,600 legally work-authorized immigrant jobseekers in family-sustaining employment.
Do you belong to any organizational networks -- nationally, regionally, or locally? If yes, please list.
Regionally, we are members of Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. Nationally, we are a founding member of the IMPRINT coalition (www.imprintproject.org) focusing on skilled immigrants.
How will you decide who to endorse as a borrower? What due diligence will you conduct?
We work very closely with a micro-lending agency (community development financial institution) in our city and we rely on their expertise to help ensure due diligence on the clients that we short list for endorsement. The clients we endorse are those who have proved to be: Trustworthy and of impeccable character; Have viable business ideas; Great members of their community; Willing to learn new ideas to grow their business; Good credit rating; Have businesses with greater social impact; Able to repay the money they borrow.
How do you plan to support the borrower, both before and after the loan is disbursed?
We run a small business program that provides individual technical assistance to businesses and entrepreneurs in Philadelphia. All the clients we endorse will be clients in our program, benefiting from our pre- and post-loan technical assistance, which includes: business planning; marketing plan development; business strategy development; accounting and finance; procurement and inventory control; social media marketing; business management; small business technology; Micro import/export; selling to government and targeted business skills workshops
How will you help us ensure that the loans you endorse have a significant and positive social impact?
We will endorse clients whose businesses have the potential to have significant contribution to the area's economic and social well being. Hence they must: Have greater social impact; contribute to economic development through tax or employment; respect the environment; and give back to the community
