Why are you interested in becoming a Trustee?
I work with creative businesses and food entrepreneurs and Kiva Zip is a great opportunity to grow and create new business in Richmond, Virginia. Funding sources for food businesses are scarce and this is an opportunity to grow the food community.
What is the mission of your organization?
I am a speaker and coach working with small businesses and the mission is to help them grow through classes and individual consulting.
In the past, how effective have you been in achieving this mission?
My business was started in 2001 and I have worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs. I have taught business lending classes and I know how difficult it is to receive business loans, so I am very excited this option is now available in our city.
Do you belong to any organizational networks -- nationally, regionally, or locally? If yes, please list.
Yes, I am on the board of River City Express Network, a chapter of ABWA, part of the National Speakers Association, and work with two collectives, the RVA Street Foodies and GrowRVA. I am also a contractor with LISC Virginia and work with new and existing businesses in Church Hill.
How will you decide who to endorse as a borrower? What due diligence will you conduct?
I work directly with many small businesses on their marketing and business plans. I have years of experience working with businesses on their funding options and helping them make good decisions. I would want to talk to them about their credit and existing loans and debt to determine if this would be a good fit.
How do you plan to support the borrower, both before and after the loan is disbursed?
Some the borrowers may clients or students of mine and in the process of business start up or grow, I will introduce the Kiva lending process. I work with businesses on their financials and their financial models, and can continue to do so with the borrowers. I have specific niche with food and art businesses.
How will you help us ensure that the loans you endorse have a significant and positive social impact?
Because I work with food entrepreneurs and the local food movement is growing in Richmond, I hope to be able to make an impact by bringing more local, fresh food to our city.
