Why are you interested in becoming a Trustee?
To help support more entrepreneurship, especially in the food sector.
What is the mission of your organization?
Our mission is Creating Community through Food. We believe that food does more than nourish: food brings people together. We think it’s our responsibility to build meaningful relationships with each part of our extended family; the food we make and sell connects our staff, our guests, our producers and the environment. In this way, we “create community through food”.
In the past, how effective have you been in achieving this mission?
Incredibly well. We started 15 years ago with a staff of six and now have over 260 employees. We work with hundreds of local producers, farmers and ranchers and 70% of our spend stays in the local economy. We have a family of 3 businesses (two markets and a creamery), a two acre farm, and co-founded a non-profit called 18 Reasons. We are feeding and teaching the values of Good Food to over 20,000 guests each week and empowering our community to support and sustain a network of local producers so that our local economy stays vibrant and unique.
Do you belong to any organizational networks -- nationally, regionally, or locally? If yes, please list.
The Specialty Food Association, The Independent Natural Food Retailers Association, The Good Food Merchants Guild, The Butchers Guild, Social Venture Network, Small Giants Network, San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition
How will you decide who to endorse as a borrower? What due diligence will you conduct?
I would not endorse anybody I have not had a prior business relationship with. Ideally, I will be supporting a network of producers we currently do business with so we can be a constant resource of sales, feedback and information for them. I would want only endorse those that are excellent at what they do, have shown the ability to commit, to communicate effectively, and to serve their community. I would want to know how they plan to use the loan, to see their proforma so I can understand how the loan will help grow their business and to see how they plan to repay it.
How do you plan to support the borrower, both before and after the loan is disbursed?
As a retailer, we would provide feedback and support on the viability of their product, on their packaging, on the ingredients used, their marketing position, and the service they provide.
How will you help us ensure that the loans you endorse have a significant and positive social impact?
I would want to endorse loans that support a local economy, that empower entrepreneurship, and create jobs. The companies I endorse must also have a social mission, be committed to operating in a sustainable manner, be thoughtful and respectful of the community they operate in and the community they feed. Ingredients and processes must be Good.
