Trustee: Central Arkansas New Agrarian Society (CANAS)
Little Rock, AR
Why are you interested in becoming a Trustee?
So that we may act as a conduit for growing our local food economy here in Central Arkansas. As a trustee of Kiva, we aim to connect enterprising folks with the funds they need to scale up food and goods production or simply repair a greenhouse.
What is the mission of your organization?
The Central Arkansas New Agrarian Society is a coalition of do-gooders, gardeners, and artisans that aims to cultivate urban agriculture in Central Arkansas by serving as a network of communication and cooperation. CANAS recognizes the fragile nature of the industrial food system and aims to address the needs of vulnerable populations with urban mini-farms like our Victory Garden Project. These farms will provide land access to surrounding residents as well as knowledge, tools, and resources that empower residents towards increased self-sufficiency. Ultimately, CANAS desires to instill in the community the beauty and necessity of a closed-loop, local, and democratic food system.
In the past, how effective have you been in achieving this mission?
We've been quite effective at achieving our goals, we have seen a huge increase in like-minded folks seeking out help with new sustainable businesses, farms, artisan food, and social enterprises. We've constructed an urban farm at 7th and Valentines St. in the Stiff Station neighborhood in Little Rock. (Victory Garden Project) We've connected many people together to create a network of shared resources and labor. Empowered individuals with the goodness of fresh, local, living foods and gardens!

How will you decide who to endorse as a borrower? What due diligence will you conduct?
CANAS will review potential borrower's business plans, sustainable practices, and provide to the borrower a network of specialist in a wide array of sustainable fields that can aid their plans to be profitable and grow our local economy.
How do you plan to support the borrower, both before and after the loan is disbursed?
Encourage growth with ideas, social networks, and access to Kiva Zip loans. Then after Kiva, continue to encourage the borrower to continue crowd-sourcing funds to scale up their enterprises to meet the demand of our localizing economy.
How will you help us ensure that the loans you endorse have a significant and positive social impact?
We will only select businesses and enterprises that have a sustainable and social platform that seek to grow to serve our community in a positive way. We seek solution-oriented folks that wish to work towards the betterment of humanity and reward durable pursuits that will flourish and bring a better way of life to Little Rock and it's surrounding communities.
