How will you decide who to endorse as a borrower? What due diligence will you conduct?
As an entrepreneur I realize the importance of conducting due diligence on potential clients/colleagues. It’s the mark of my responsibility, and it screens out undesirables who could wind up doing with me. I only endorse businesses and individuals with good moral, and value ethics systems in place; creating opportunities for others. Before beginning my due diligence, I will almost always tell the subject in advance that I intend to do due diligence; this way the parties do not feel as though I am doing something in secrecy. I personally believe that people deserve to know your practices right up front concerning business. In fact; most people understand. I make them aware that I am clear on the privacy act; applicable laws, including the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. People are often the best and only sources of non-public information about a person; but can alternatively be some of the least reliable sources. Unlike photographs or the printed page, people misperceive, misremember, forget and sometimes just lie. I corroborate, check, and double-check any disputable statements. Documents don’t lie, but the people who write them sometimes do. That’s especially true of court documents. Moreover, documents rarely tell the whole story. Just because someone was sued doesn’t mean the allegations had merit; for example. First-hand observation is one of the most effective ways to gather information about a subject. I always keep in mind the Heisenberg Principle in that the act of observation can alter my subject’s behavior—simply because he knows he’s being watched. In closing; I never believe anything without evidence. I take lots of notes, then look at the whole picture from an objective point of view. In the end, the most important thing to remember is to think for yourself and make up your own mind.
