Trustee: Pacific Islands Small Business Development Center Network (PISBDCN)
Why are you interested in becoming a Trustee?
The PISBDCN is interested in becoming a trustee so that SBDC clients in the Micronesia region can be eligible for Kiva Zip loans to help start or expand their small businesses.
What is the mission of your organization?
The University of Guam Pacific Islands Small Business Development Center Network's (PISBDCN) mission is to support the growth and economic development of the U.S. affiliated pacific islands in the western pacific region by providing high quality training and one-on-one confidential counseling to existing and prospective small businesses.
In the past, how effective have you been in achieving this mission?
The PISBDCN has been very successful in helping clients start or expand their businesses over the seventeen years the network has been in existence. We measure this by the number of businesses started/bought/expanded, the number of jobs created, the number of jobs retained and the capital infusion we assist clients in getting. From 5/4/1995 - 9/30/2012 we have assisted clients in obtaining $42,326,890 in capital infusion, start/buy/expand 885 businesses and creating/retaining 3217 jobs.
Do you belong to any organizational networks -- nationally, regionally, or locally? If yes, please list.
As the network Director of the Pacific Islands Small Business Development Center Network I am a member of the Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC), on the Executive Committee of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) - Micronesia Chapter, on the Guam Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Development & Focus Committee, on the Guam Contractors Association's Small Business Committee, on the board of the Pacific Islands Microcredit Institute and the Guam Representative to the Hawaii Pacific Export Council.
How will you decide who to endorse as a borrower? What due diligence will you conduct?
The SBDC program will provide one-to-one confidential counseling to the clients we serve and recommend only borrowers who we feel have a sound plan and have a great potential at their business succeeding in order to be able to repay their loan.
How do you plan to support the borrower, both before and after the loan is disbursed?
The SBDC program provides free confidential counseling/technical assistance to clients both before and after they start their business. We also offer low cost business training.
How will you help us ensure that the loans you endorse have a significant and positive social impact?
We foresee these loans going to individuals that are low income and are not bankable. By helping them start their own business it will start them on the path to be financially independent and not need any public assistance.
