Personal Story

I grew up in Bethlehem. I received a bachelors degree in engineering in Palestine and then I met my wife and we have been married for twenty years. We have three children, two of them were born in Bethlehem and one in the United States. We were struggling in Bethlehem and decided to move to the United States. We moved here in 1998. When we moved here, I worked at a market on Saginaw. I decided I wanted to open my own business and my mother helped. We opened the business in 2005. Business is good but I am looking for working capital. I know my business can do better. I have dreams for the future and they include a better life for my children with a good education.

Business Description

My business is a great restaurant, my customers love my food. I decided to start this business in 2005 and planned my menu very carefully. The biggest challenge is the economy and keeping my customers happy. I love all the customers who come into my store. I have learned their favorite foods and even what their children like to eat. My goals for the future include converting my store into a grocery store and restaurant so I can keep my customers happy. They are always asking me if I can supply them with daily needs. They would like for me to provide them with fresh food and good prices. I would like to be able to give them what they need. I have a signed petition from my customers to help me get the funding I need to help them with what they ask for. My dreams are to have a fresh meat counter and grocery with fresh vegetable, and fresh bread. I would like to have a place where my clients can purchase meals for their family. I would like to increase the staff I have because this area needs to increase employment. I am most proud of the customers I am able to serve everyday. They like my store and they keep coming back.

What is the purpose of this loan?

If I have what my clients ask for, they will come in more frequently. This loan will impact my business in a very positive way. I will be able to serve my customers in every way they are requesting.

Tell us about your relationship with this borrower.

In October 2012, Michigan Corps began building a network of community partners in Flint interested in supporting entrepreneurship and social innovation. Issa was introduced to us by one of those community partners that has worked with him in the past to provide micro lending and technical assistance services in support of his business. This organization and Issa saw Kiva Zip as a perfect opportunity for a growing business with a strong social mission and connection to the community.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Issa runs a growing restaurant in a struggling area of Flint, one of the toughest cities in America. He's been able to be successful because of a high intensity drive, dynamism and work ethic in attracting and building a loyal customer base. We believe that Issa is exactly the type of entrepreneur that will help drive the revitalization of the Flint community, and build meaningful relationships through his fundraising on the Kiva Zip platform.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Issa's restaurant business is growing but he needs to invest in the necessary equipment and inventory to open up a new service offering. He needs to make a repair to his freezer and then invest in the inventory to start offering fresh foods directly to his customers, who have requested it. Issa counts on his business to support his family, and increased revenue and profit will help put Issa and his family in a position of long term stability and success.
