Personal Story

I was born and brought up in Mogadishu, Somalia where I completed my high school in 1976 at the age of 18. My graduation from my undergraduate program in English literature and history was in 1981 and I was 24 years old. I worked as a high school teacher in the academic years of 1981-1982, after which I was hired as a lecturer to teach at the same college I graduated from. I was then 26 years old! While teaching, I went back to school for a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) program sponsored by California State University, Fresno. I graduated in 1986 at the age of 29. In 1987, after I graduated and received my MBA, I worked for the Ministry of Finance and Treasury as the head of the Income Tax branch in the Abdulaziz district in Mogadishu, Somalia The emphasis of the age signifies a remarkable achievement in Somalia.

In 1984 I, together with two of my friends, founded Mogadishu School of Languages and Management in Mogadishu, Somalia. That was my first business investment. It was very successful in terms of achieving our mission of helping Somali students while earning a decent living for us and our families.

After the civil war broke out in Somalia, I fled to Somalia's southwestern neighboring country of Kenya as a refugee. In 1998 I came to the US seeking asylum. I worked in Minnesota in different capacities, including Adjunct Professor at the Metro State University. I became one of the founders and a shareholder in an adult day care. Now I own a durable medical equipment company. This is an industry where I can contribute to the well-being of members of the communities in Minnesota, particularly the large Somali and other immigrant communities.

I see myself five years from now helping young entrepreneurs become more effective and successful in their business endeavors.

Business Description

Bridge Medical Supply, Inc. is a Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS) with the mission to provide and improve healthcare services while being responsive to the community and patient needs for comfort and independence.

The idea of starting this type of business occurred to me when I saw the dire need that Somali and other immigrant seniors have in order to stay home instead of being institutionalized. Back in Somalia, children take care of their aging parents. However, DMEPOS carrying medical equipment and supplies that these seniors need in order to be in their community is a relatively new concept to us. Not only that, but the retiring baby boomers generation is a priority in the health care sector. I want to help all seniors in Minnesota and nationwide based on our company scope. It is a noble task!

Our biggest challenge is capital. DMEPOS companies carry large inventory for recurring customers without which it is difficult to continue serving our customers.

Our management goals are to continuously strive to provide the highest quality of home health care equipment, supplies and services to our community and customers. Our purpose is assist our customers with proper selection of equipment or products to best meet their medical needs, as prescribed by their physician while being mindful of our fiscal responsibility.

One of our medium range goals for Bridge Medical Supply, Inc. is to establish branches in three other states in the US and one in southern Minnesota, possibly the City of Owatonna.

Starting a company from scratch and bringing it to a demonstrated fully compliant DMEPOS (Durable Medical Equipment Prosthetic, Orthotics and Supplies) and passing accreditation with flying colors is quite an achievement!

What is the purpose of this loan?

The purpose of this loan is to buy inventory and supplies. Once we purchase inventory we'll resell and that is how we generate revenue. In this case, my goal is to use this small loan and become eligible for $10,000 and when we pay it back, we want to borrow another $20,000. This is a way to raise funds in addition to the revenue growth that we expect to generate during this period. Our three-year sales forecast and related budget reflect that we should be able to generate $150,000 worth of revenue in 2014. This loan will significantly contribute to this goal.
