Personal Story

Greetings! My name is Leeretta Payne and I am the owner of Legacy Café. Before owning my own establishment, at the young age of 16, I landed my first job at Eddie’s Restaurant. Engaging with the customers who frequented the restaurant encouraged and inspired me to start something of my own. In between, I have raised a family, received my Bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University. In 2010, opportunity and need was the catalyst that persuaded me that it was time to peruse entrepreneurship. Owning a business takes long hours, dedication, happiness, and heartbreak. I have experienced all of these emotions while working for someone else, so I surmised that I can experience all of those emotions while being my own boss.

Business Description

Legacy Café is a mobile café-catering company. The Legacy Café caters to businesses, organizations, and political events. The café menu includes: premium coffee, tea beverages, pastries, desserts, and chocolate. The Legacy Café does business with other small and minority business owners when opportunities arise. The Legacy Café has partnered with Amani International and Glenn’s Cookies in the past. This is only phase one of a two-phase strategic plan to open a permanent location in 18-24 months. A two phased plan is designed to be able to finance and market in order to gain recognition and raise funds for the permanent location. The permanent location will be the childhood home of August Wilson.

What is the purpose of this loan?

The Legacy Café will purchase much needed equipment with this loan, such as a percolator, commercial grinder, display cookies and cupcakes, and cupcake pans. The Legacy Café will also purchase software, such as: QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Suite. A laptop will be purchased as well, to utilize the software. The Legacy Café will also need an assistant to help me manage and run the café. I would like to hire from my community, preferably someone who is a veteran or someone formerly incarcerated.
