Personal Story

I have lived in Arkansas pretty much all my life. I spent a lot of time on my grandparents' farm both working and playing. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas with a degree in Education and certifications in English, science, and social studies. I have taught middle school for 15 years in each of the subjects just mentioned, as well as reading and geography. My son graduated from the high school where I taught last, and since then I have been pursuing the "ultimate science fair" reality of becoming an entrepreneur. My favorite subject to teach is science, and I integrated it with English every year by entering my students into science fair competitions. I organized the school's local fairs, chose competent judges for each category, and took my top two students in each category to compete at the district level, which I often hosted and organized also. The next level of competition was state, where my students advanced if they placed in the top two for their categories. Along the way, I helped the students to write their hypotheses, procedures, and conclusions as well as develop their experiments, trials, and presentations. Several of my students placed first, second, and third every year we competed. Since I have become involved in this business, developing the product, applying for patents, testing, and everything else involved, I would like to see it to fruition, if for nothing else, to show my students, children, and upcoming students the real life application and reason to be motivated to take on such an endeavor.

Business Description

Shelwes will manufacture the patent-pending Automatic Contour Sander. I decided to get involved with this business in 2010 when a friend of mine showed me his idea for a new technology which would make auto body work, or any work which involves sanding easier, faster, and therefore, more profitable. Every step of the process has been a new challenge from the patenting process to discovering which materials would be best for each part, to precision engineering the parts to fit together. Our customer base will be the auto body workers, but we also intend to capture do-it-yourselfers and perhaps government contracts. Goals for the future include developing more products to be sold in line with the Automatic Contour Sander. Our ultimate goal is to create as many jobs as we can to help boost our economy. I am most proud of the quality of our product and am very eager for everyone who does this type of work to be able to obtain this technologically innovative tool. The timing of this project along with the programs being implemented in this area have come together in such a way as to create such synergy that the motivation to succeed is undoubtedly palpable.

What is the purpose of this loan?

I will spend the money on parts, supplies, and equipment needed by the company. Some may have to go to attorney fees for legal issues with the patenting process. Some may be used to attend a trade show, like SEMA or perhaps an even more local one to help get the product "out there." Since there are so many costs associated with a start-up business, there are limitless possibilities. This loan will help offset some of the personal costs I have been assuming and lift a little financial burden for a while until the company is stable enough to sustain itself.
