The Green Corner Store

Personal Story

I lived in various parts of the United States before moving to Little Rock seven years ago. I was born in Wisconsin and grew up in Southern California. I enjoyed spending summer days at the beach where my love of nature and a strong commitment to preserving and sustaining the environment began. I started my career in retail working with major department and specialty stores. Later I parlayed my extensive retail background into a business consulting service. As my passion for environmental causes grew, I began to embrace my ‘green heart’ and wanted to dovetail my ecological values with the way I earned money.
I began to offer environmental education programs developed by the Northwest Earth Institute and in 2006, I founded Arkansas Earth Institute. I held discussion courses in Little Rock.

Business Description

The Green Corner Store is a retail store that sells environmentally friendly, quality goods that are “greener” without sacrificing style, convenience or comfort. We emphasize ’buying local’ and carry handmade goods from local artisans and many products from Arkansas companies. Like a general store, we offer items for everyday living. For more than 15 years, I researched companies in the United States that had a strong business ethic and a desire to offer sustainable products that were healthy to use and safer the employees who manufactured them.
I decided to open this business around 2007 after sharing what I was learning with others who wanted to live ‘greener’ and couldn’t find any where to purchase them locally.

My customers are multi generational. They are mostly women ages 25-59 who are aware of the environmental pressures on the eco systems globally. They are health conscious and starting to make the connection between their personal health and the health of the planet. Some may have compromised immune system, health issues, or allergies and beginning to research ways to take better care of themselves and their families.

The biggest challenges I face are not enough time to keep up with growing demand and ability to manage and grow the business further with limited funds. In the future, I want my business to continue to be a place where people know they can trust the information, service and products we represent. I am most proud of becoming a place where we can incubate other entrepreneurs in a real life setting - as their very first retail site. We have allowed several start ups to put their products test, market and sell their product at the store in their early development stage.

What is the purpose of this loan?

I am going to use the loan to develop an e-commerce section for my website.
This will allow my business to increase access for our products to those that live in rural areas and outside the immediate Central Arkansas population. It will make more people aware of the range of products we carry. This website expansion will promote awareness for my business, grow my customer base, and increase sales by 20- 25% in the first year. This will allow my business to become financially secure and move closer to becoming sustainable economically for myself and my employees. With the addition to our sales, I hope I will be able to achieve a living wage for the staff and continue to be a viable institution for the community.

She is easy to work with, is always looking for ways to better herself/ her business and her business has been a huge boost to the South Main area.

The Green Corner sells earth friendly merchandise. She is constantly looking for new products to enhance and strengthen her merchandise niche. She is at a point in her business where she needs a boost to her online sales capabilities, as I believe this is her strongest potential growth area. This loan will give her the ability to have her online presence be as strong as her physical store's presence.
