Personal Story

I grew up in Argentina and at the age of 13 moved to Belarus where my family started a humanitarian aid organization to help Chernobyl victims. At the age of 20, I came to the States to receive my Social Work degree. I fell in love and got married right after graduating from college.

After the birth of our first daughter, I wanted to stay home to raise her, which would give me the opportunity to concentrate on my hobby, knitting. After months of making her all kinds of outfits and accessories, My family and friends started encouraging me to sell online.

My dream is for my business to become more successful in order to provide jobs for other stay-at-home moms, and to open my own shop.

I would love to be able to pick up my children from school and bring them home, rather than having to worry about an 8-5 job and sending my kids to a daycare or after-school program.

Business Description

After the birth of my first daughter, I wanted to be able to stay home with her. I was blessed with the opportunity to start my own business doing what I loved doing the most–knitting. I started selling on Etsy in 2009. In 2010, we moved to Arkansas where I became a regular seller at the Farmer’s Market every Saturday. By 2011, I was pregnant and unable to do the Farmer’s Market so I began renting a spot in a store where my items were available 7 days a week. Now, X&E (Ximena & Elle) is in 5 different stores and there's a chance we'll be in 2-3 more shops by the end of this year.

Unfortunately, I can’t meet the demand. I make purses out of repurposed sweaters, I knit dresses, winter accessories, Christmas Stockings, baby clothing, and I design and hand stitch t-shirts and baby onesies. Everything in my shop is designed and done by me. Every piece of material is drawn, cut and hand stitched by me. Everything I make is very time consuming and I’m not able to produce enough items for the stores as I’d like to.

I am in desperate need of someone to help me with the cutting and sewing of my handbags, or cutting out the designs I would then later hand stitch onto the t-shirts.

I have also started selling the yarn I bring directly from Argentina. I started buying the yarn there so that I could afford selling knitted items made out of luxurious yarns. Now, my customers are able to buy the yarn at a very affordable price.

I try to keep the yarn price to a minimum (lower than other local yarn stores) and pay the farmers and manufacturers what they deserve. I’m also trying to start buying more yarn from a not-for-profit Fair Trade organization that works with farmers in Peru and Bolivia.

My ultimate goal is to own my own store, where I can knit and sell my products. Hopefully my daughters will get into the hobby and start helping.

What is the purpose of this loan?

With this loan, I’ll be able to hire a talented stay-at-home mom to help me with the production of my felted handbags and t-shirts. I will also hire a photographer to take professional pictures of all my products to sell on Etsy and on my website. Lastly, I will buy more inventory.

Right now I’m getting estimates on the photography services, but I’m calculating $1500 on a part time worker, $300 on all the pictures and website creation, and $1200 on yarn and t-shirts for my inventory.

This loan will help me greatly by expanding my business to more stores and helping my website and Etsy store look more professional. People are attracted by good pictures. I truly believe this will take my business to the next level.
