Personal Story

I grew up in Little Rock and was always interested in the outdoors and the environment. Lolisa is from Cleveland, Ohio and traveled to Little Rock for the AmeriCorps program in order to explore the sustainable side of her background in construction management. Lolisa and I met during our AmeriCorps service at the Clinton Foundation here in Little Rock. During our term of service, we provided energy assessments for low- to moderate-income families around Arkansas and also made the energy efficiency improvements on their homes. Being able to combine our passions for helping people, improving the environment, and improving the physical fabric of our community proved very enjoyable for the both of us. Finding steady work in the industry after the completion of our term of service didn't come so easily however, so we decided to try to create a business for ourselves.

Business Description

We perform home energy assessments to diagnose the biggest energy wasters in the home. Based on the information collected, we make recommendations for the most cost-effective improvements.
We decided to start the business after finding a lack of job opportunities performing such work in our area. We work on single-family and multi-family homes for homeowners and renters. The spirit of service and commitment to community that was nurtured during our introduction to energy efficiency analysis imbues our business actions, and we focus our efforts in the communities who stand to benefit the most from our type of work. As it turns out, the homes that are the most inefficient users of energy also typically house people who most acutely need cost-effective solutions for their energy problems.

As a small start-up, our biggest initial challenge was attracting customers. However, over the last year, we have built relationships with many organizations and individuals that have helped us get steady work. Future goals include hiring our first employee and expanding the energy efficiency services we offer.

Tell us about your relationship with this borrower.

Brian Broussard and his partner Lolisa Crowe at Verve Energy Solutions have provided energy audits (blower door tests) and served as project leaders at energy efficiency improvement projects at community buildings in low-income neighborhoods - mission projects provided by Arkansas Interfaith Power and Light. The test-in and test out procedures allow Arkansas IPL a way to measure whether efforts were effective. We have relied on recommendations from Brian and Lolisa on several projects and will ask again for their assistance on future projects.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Brian and Lolisa are conscientious and responsible. They go above and beyond the call of duty in serving their fellow mankind through our mission projects. They have traveled great distances, attended numerous meetings, and remained patient with un-skilled volunteers who need their guidance to help insulate buildings.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Brian and Lolisa started Verve Energy Solutions to provide energy audits. The audit process is critical to correct weatherization of a home or building. The process requires equipment and tools. A Kiva Zip loan will help them purchase the tools needed, replace tools when necessary, and promote their business to potential clients. Weatherization and energy efficiency are hot topics, and we expect their business to grow steadily.
