Personal Story

I grew up in South Arkansas (El Dorado) and am the youngest of four siblings. I graduated from UAMS and planned on being an RN all my life but fate changed that. Family has always been important to me and education has always been a priority. Educating myself about my ancestors and my culture came after I started a family and it sparked something inside that made me realize that I wasn't as smart as I thought I was. I had grown up in a sheltered but loving environment but I never pushed the envelope and thought outside the box. My husband's love for the arts and his desire that our children be raised in an artistic environment sparked a fire that burns within me to share my passion of exploring art and literature and making it part of my daily life. I am an artist at heart, a true patron and a cheerleader who has turned a thought into a reality.
My business: Pyramid Art, Books and Custom Framing/Hearne Fine Art is a combination of businesses that support and connect each other. Realizing the importance of details and organization, I am a deliberate and focused worker. Today I am seeking ways to increase awareness of my family business and to solidify my place in the local, regional and national marketplace.

Business Description

Pyramid Art, Books & Custom Framing/Hearne Fine Art was established in June of 1988. It has evolved over the last 25 years from a local print gallery to a full service decorative and fine art gallery. We are booksellers and offer the service of custom picture framing. Our focus is African American culture. We host monthly events to include solo and group exhibitions and book signings for local, regional and national artists and authors. We host community events and discussions.
Pyramid/Hearne Fine Art was established to fill a void that existed in the state of Arkansas and increase cultural awareness of African Americans and the community at large.
My biggest challenge has been with marketing efforts. It has been a challenge to determine the most effective forum in which to market our products and services offered and determine the best use of a limited budget. My customers are multicultural and range from all ages and all walks of life.
I have grown my business over the last 24 years with consistency in quality and outstanding customer service. My plans for the future are to continue to build relationships and collaborate with the community at large by ensuring quality and substance coupled with aesthetics and promotion of family. I plan to encourage community outreach and continue to provide quality service and relevant products. I plan to focus on ten artists and increase their visibility by marketing through collaborating with other galleries and exhibiting at respected national and international art fairs. I am proud of the longevity of my business and the impact we have had in this community.

What is the purpose of this loan?

This loan will be used to produce a 12' x 12' 18-month wall calendar designed to market the upcoming gallery exhibitions from June 2013- December 2014.

The wall calendar will also share ongoing monthly activities of Pyramid Art, Books & Custom Framing. The full-color calendar will document 25 years of business in the community and provide a keepsake for clients to have signed by the respective artists. The images will be large enough and attractive for framing and the originals will be available for sale during the respective exhibitions planned. The revenue from the calendar will help pay back the loan as will the sale of the original artwork. This calendar will be a marketing tool for the bookstore/gallery and will be utilized by all clientele. We also will utilize calendar images for our website to extend the branding effect and will allow these images to be downloaded with a silhouette of the logo celebrating 25 years. It will be a celebration of the artists presented and all associated with Pyramid/Hearne Fine Art. The cost of producing 500 calendars, which includes hiring a graphic designer, printing and packaging, photography, and marketing tools, is estimated to be $5500.

I met Garbo Hearne in 1989 when her business, Pyramid Art, Books &
Custom Framing/Hearne Fine Art was located on Main Street. Throughout the years I have been a customer of Pyramid; purchasing books, having pieces of art framed, and attending the frequently held programs and activities.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Garbo is a woman who is determined to make her visions become reality. Garbo is sincere in her desire to offer solid programs and activities that broaden the knowledge of the community in every aspect: mentally, physically, spiritually, economically and culturally. Garbo is passionate about art, and is continuously exploring and creating opportunities for art and community to connect. There is a confidence you witness as Garbo quietly and calmly moves through all the projects and tasks required to keep her business moving and succeeding.

Pyramid Art , Books & Custom Framing/Hearne Fine Art is turning 25 years old in June of this year. Over the years Garbo has cultivated relationships with artists locally and nationally, and the community has benefitted by being able to attend their exhibits and lectures. Many of those artists will have another opportunity to showcase their images by being featured in a calendar celebrating the 25 year journey of Pyramid Art, Books & Custom Framing/Hearne Fine Art. My endorsement is in support of the creation of the calendar that will reach across all borders of people who like and appreciate art.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Twenty-five years of being able to survive as a bookstore and art gallery is a signficant accomplishment. Hopefully the celebration of 25 years of being in business will be instrumental in moving Pyramid Art, Books & Custom Framing/Hearne Fine Art to the next level. Over the years I have witnessed the growth and expansion of this business which is always focused on offering the very best to the community. Twelve accomplished artists will be offered the opportunity to have images in the calendar. Throughout this year exhibits and lectures featuring the artists highlighted in the calendar will be held at Pyramid. The community will be able to purchase the calendar and have it signed by the artists.

The main challenge for Garbo is contacting the artists and following up to secure the images for the calendar. Although this will be a challenge for Garbo to produce the calendar while handling all the other responsibilities of her business, she will make it happen and it will be of quality and amazing just like all the other exhibits and programs offered at Pyramid Art, Books & Custom Framing/Hearne Fine Art.
