Personal Story

I grew up in up country (Siaya) in a family of 6 siblings. My parents were peasant farmers. They were able to educate us and I went up to secondary school but dropped out in Form 2 due to high school fees.

I came to Nairobi in 1988 after I got married. My Husband and I were blessed with 6 children but 2 passed away. In 1993, to help support my family, I started a food business but in 2005 my premises were demolished by the city council.

However I was not deterred. Shortly thereafter, I started my current business selling curios and detergents in Kibera. One day, my dream is to be a major supplier in Kenya for curios and detergents.

Personal Update - Mar 14, 2013

The last loan have helped me. I am now earning more profit from the business which has enabled me to pay school fees for my children without struggle and am also supporting two orphans by paying their school fees. My business is well-stocked and my poultry is also doing well as a side business, thanks to my lenders and Kiva Microfunds-- keep up the good work

Personal Update - Sep 17, 2012

I have been able to support my children from the income that has been constantly coming from my business after I added more stock.

Business Description

My business makes curios and detergent which I then sell. I started this business in 2005 after my food kiosk was demolished by the city council. I wanted to start my own business to make a livelihood after this setback and also empower other women to make a livelihood as well.

My customers are locals and tourists. I want to be a supplier in the country and the region.

My biggest challenge is competition. Many people have started doing the same business thus saturating the market. My desire is to bring in new and unique designs.

Business Update - Mar 14, 2013

The business is well-stocked compared to before the last loan. I am earning more profit now which helps me address some of my basic needs, and every week I can come up with new designs which attracts more customers thanks to my lenders.

Business Update - Sep 17, 2012

My last loan helped me buy raw materials for designing new and unique jewelry. Since getting the first loan, my sales have increased noticeably.

What did you use your last loan for?

I bought stock for my business.

What is the purpose of this loan?

I will be spending the loan on the same business.

I am hoping to purchase some African kanga fabric which I will use in making African bags and small African purses which are in demand right now and this will increase my revenue and profit.

This loan will impact my business by getting more new customers because of the variety of products which I will have compared to before.

By earning more profit the loan will have impacted my life and the life of my family.
