Personal Story

I grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the middle of the city. Growing up I never thought that I would move to NY, fall in love, get married and start a farm.

At 24 years old my husband had a heart problem, and found that he had high cholesterol. The doctors wanted to put him on medication for the rest of his life. We did a lot of research and found that eating pasture raised meats, poultry and eggs could really make a difference to your health, and happiness. We looked around and really couldn't find many completely pasture raised meats, so we did what any crazy person would do. We ordered 200 chickens, and bought a couple of pigs. Five years later our family and farm have grown significantly. We have 3 children, 2 healthy boys 3 months and 3 1/2 years old who are with us, and a little girl waiting for us in Heaven.

In the near future I hope to be able to stay at home with my boys and farm full time with my family.

Business Description

West Wind Acres raised animals for meat, as close to they would on their own in nature. We raise, chickens for meat and eggs, sheep, pigs, and cattle all on pasture.

Our poultry live in our lush pastures from about 3 weeks old for the rest of their lives. The rest of our animals live in our pastures from the moment they are born. After several generations, we have breeding stock that are excellent mothers, and thrive living on pasture with little if any outside inputs.

We decided to start our farm about 5 years ago when my husband (then fiance) had cholesterol problems. Our farm was started just to have meats for us, then we started selling to friends and family. Currently we have a wonderful customer base who purchase our Tasty Meats. We sell our meats through our CSA, Buyers Club, and to customers who pick up at our farm. We also sell our animals as quarters, halves, and whole animal.

Our customers are health conscious, people and families who like to buy local and know where their food comes from. Our products are also available at a few select retail locations in the Capital District of New York State.

Farming is full of small bumps in the road. Currently our biggest challenge growing our herds to meet the demand for our meats. We have a customer base that purchases our meats as fast as we can grow the animals. We are hoping to add many cattle to our herd, as well as a new breeding boar for one of our pig herds, and a new ram for our flock of sheep.

In the near future we hope to grow our herds to the point that the farm can support our family.

Walking our beautiful fields, and watching our health animals always puts a smile on our faces.

What is the purpose of this loan?

The purpose of this loan is to grow our herds so that we can offer our Tasty Meats to more families who would like to feed their families our nutrient dense, pasture raised products.

The loan would be uses to purchase a new boar from Sugar Mountain Farm, they have wonderful genetics for pasture raised pigs. Adding these genetics will increase the litter size of our piglets, speed up the length of time to grow a pig, and add diversity to our pig herds.

The loan would also be used to purchase an additional Katahdin Ram to breed this years lambs to, this will avoid inbreeding and should double our lamb crop next year. The ram we would like to purchase comes from a farm that has raised sheep for many years, the owner is a Professor at a local Agriculture College, she has been breeding her sheep to the same standards as we have. This rams mother is the highest producer of 75 ewes, his growth rate is also excellent.

The balance of the loan would be used to purchase cattle to increase the size of our herd. This in turn will allow us to sell more beef, we have a high demand for our beef, and can not keep up with the demand.
