Personal Story

I am a born and raised metro-Detroiter and Michigander and am proud to call this beautiful area my home. I am also a loyal Detroit sports fan and especially love my Wings, Tigers, Lions and Michigan Wolverines.
I attended Grand Valley State University where I studed Political Science and am certified in Holistic Nutrition through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
I am married to my partner in both life and business and together we have a 3.5 year old son, Jack.
Always a baker, I had to re-learn how to bake with allergy-free ingredients once I received my food intolerance diagnosis. That meant no gluten, dairy, soy or eggs! But I refused to let that stop me and gradually, I started to produce really good tasting treats! Once I finally decided to heed my friends' advice to start a baking business, I never looked back.
My ultimate wish for my business is that it sustains my family, supports my community and inspires other women to do the same.

Business Description

Motown Freedom Bakery is a mobile allergen-friendly bakery specializing in sweet treats with a healthy twist. Every item on our menu is free of the Top 8 (plus 2) most common food allergens - gluten, dairy, soy, egg, peanut, tree nut, fish, shellfish, corn and sesame. But we don't stop there. MFB is committed to using high-quality and more nutritious ingredients, providing a better choice of sweet treat.
No matter whether you live with food allergies or intolerances, are vegan or simply conscious of the food you eat, MFB gives everyone the Freedom to Say Yes.
Currently, we deliver to customers primarily in the metro-Detroit area but are looking to expand our reach in creative ways, including developing a co-op style order and delivery system and shipping to customers across the country. We are also looking to build a dedicated kitchen and production facility that will be certified allergy-free and kosher. Ultimately, MFB's mission reaches far beyond allergy-free baked goods.
MFB is about much more than sweet treats and desserts. It's about trust, integrity, passion and determination. It's also about providing a better option - no compromising and no guilt. Only Freedom!

What is the purpose of this loan?

The funds we receive thru a KIVA Zip loan will go toward several different areas: ingredient and equipment purchases, brand design, marketing and public relations and event fees. All of these efforts are geared toward increasing our baking capacity, expanding our market exposure, creating brand awareness and ultimately increasing our overall sales.
Cost for each Expenditure:
Ingredients and equipment: $3,000
Branding, marketing & printing and public relations: $2,000
I believe this loan can be the kick-start to launching MFB into an upgraded business model that will enable us to serve many more people. We have a big vision of the impact we can have not just in metro-Detroit but nationally as well and KIVA can help us make this vision a reality.
