Personal Story

I’ve encountered many challenges in life but am known to have a resilient spirit. I was born in the Bronx and raised in foster care. At the age of 23, I moved to Florida where I met my wife of 25 years, who was from Michigan. About 27 years ago, she and I moved to Detroit, and I’ve been here ever since. I am deeply embedded in my community!

Two years ago, my wife passed away and shortly thereafter, I became homeless. It was a hard and eye opening experience, and it was during that time that I met the Ark Association, a local non-profit that develops programs to assist people from the community with physical, mental, financial and addictive challenges in becoming more productive members of society. The Ark Association walked hand in hand with myself to help me emerge from homelessness, and I now serve on their board of directors.

Over the years, I’ve had many jobs in customer service and really enjoy interacting with people! I learned about the Thrive Detroit micro-franchise program through my work with the Ark Association and am being trained to start my own windshield repair business. This will enable me to have the working flexibility I need, given that I’ve been recovering from heart surgery. It will also channel my skills in building relationships with customers and local businesses who are willing to host me on site to provide windshield repair services.

Business Description

My business is part of a national windshield chip repair franchise. I decided to purchase a Pro Windshield Repair Franchise because of the low start-up cost, training, and flexibility in doing the business. I started this business because I want to have a way to generate income for my household. I believe that having and running a microenterprise is a great way to position myself and my family for entrepreneurship and a future in business.

What is the purpose of this loan?

The loan will cover the franchise fee, all repair equipment and business training, invoices, business cards, insurance, banner, fender cover, uniform, as well as assistance with basic business set-up along with follow-up and support at start-up and forward to ensure success.

I hope to generate enough income through this franchise to cover most or all of my household expenses and build up a savings account. I also hope to position myself for the next level of business in the future.

Tell us about your relationship with this borrower.

We met Elias through our very first Kiva Detroit entrepreneur, Delphia, founder of Thrive Detroit street newspaper. Thrive Detroit provides those currently or at risk of being homeless with low-barrier microenterprise opportunities selling copies of Thrive Detroit. One of Delphia's Kiva lenders, who runs a windshield repair franchise in Southeast MI reached out to Thrive Detroit to begin developing a program whereby vendors of the street paper could access the training and resources to start their own windshield repair operation. Michigan Corps has partnered with Thrive Detroit to support a group of individuals going through this program, beginning with Elias.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Elias has been through a series of very difficult circumstances over the last several years including the passing of his wife, an experience of homelessness and illness. Today, he has emerged as a recognized leader in the community given his work with a local non profit that supports individuals struggling with homelessness. Elias cares about giving back and is incredibly resilient. He is well-loved in the community and has a knack for building relationships. With a Kiva loan, Elias will be able to begin and succeed with his windshield repair business, affording him a more flexible work schedule and the income that will support him and his health needs.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Elias will begin a windshield repair operation, which is part of a reputable windshield chip repair franchise run by a Kiva lender. As a micro-franchisee, he will receive training and operating support to run the business. A $2,000 Kiva loan will cover all repair equipment and business training, invoices, business cards, insurance, banner, fender cover, uniform, as well as financial training and assistance with the set-up of his business operation.

This first of its kind micro-franchise program in Michigan will give individuals like Elias an opportunity to build much needed income for their families, while benefiting from ongoing support.
