Personal Story

I was born in Flint, MI, though I was raised for most of my life in Kalamazoo MI. My family had financial difficulties at times because of illness, which taught me at an early age the necessity of entrepreneurship and I have had the entrepreneurial outlook on life ever since. In Kalamazoo, my brother and I became great student athletes. I ended up choosing Wayne State University after high school where I study public relations. I am currently entering my last semester of studies. After I earn my degree at WSU, I plan on applying to the Ross School of Business and school of Natural Resources and Environment to a dual MBA/MS.

Business Description

The Social Club Grooming Company provides environmentally friendly grooming services as well as health and beauty education to the metropolitan Detroit community, through our socially responsible practices. I decided to start this business two years ago. I wanted to start an environmentally sustainable barbershop/salon because of the amount of chemically harsh materials used and the amount of waste in the industry. I wanted to solve some of these problems, while also talking about them in a very natural way. For example all of the untreated hair that we cut is recycled to be used in compost. Natural hair accelerates the composting process and renders nitrogen which trees and other vegetation needs, in order to grow.

Most of our customers are young professionals that live and work in the Detroit area. Because we are located in the center of Wayne State University’s main campus, we attract a lot of the 30,000 students that attend the University. We have an extremely solid customer base. In the future we plan to expand our business by building a network of Social Club signature salons that use our environmentally sustainable practices. We recycle about 6 pounds of hair per month, which help a lot of saplings grow. We want to design a system in which it makes it easy for other salons to participate in hair recycling so we can grow more trees for our parks and other public spaces in Detroit and around the world eventually.

What is the purpose of this loan?

With this loan, I am going to buy our first batch of inventory. A lot of our customers stay in the dorms above our space and need shampoo, conditioner, hair oils, lotions, combs, etc. We will be the provider of these cosmetics and grooming tools. I am also going to use the loan to start promoting what we are doing in our community in order to attract more customers, which will help us grow as well as do more for the community and environment. I am also going to expand our businesses into two new services that we cant provide because my initial investment wasnt enough to fully revitalize the space.

Tell us about your relationship with this borrower.

We met Sebastian through our community partnership with the Wayne State University student entrepreneurial support program, Blackstone Launch Pad. He pitched his business at an event where Michigan Corps was a panelist and shortly thereafter, he reached out to us about funding opportunities through Kiva Detroit. Sebastian has also been participating in a triple bottom line business incubator program at the co-working space where Michigan Corps is based.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Sebastian is a young visionary and instantly connects to whomever he speaks with. Sebastian knows how to rally the community around him and is motivated to create much needed community gathering spaces & opportunities near Wayne State, where he studied. While his barber shop and stylist services are producing good early revenue and margins, he has plans and investments to expand into a variety of spa and grooming services. He's also recycling all of his cut hair into compost and is hoping to expand his recycling and sustainability efforts.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

The Social Club Grooming Company is an environmentally sustainable barbershop/salon that provides grooming and health/beauty education services. One place that Sebastian would like to invest is in grooming and hair supply products, a high margin retail product for many salons. To do so he needs to invest in inventory. His business also lacks a suitable website and he wants to use the loan to fund a new website as well as other promotional materials to continue his growth. More business and financial stability means more community impact and a growing compelling story about a cutting edge business model focused on environmental stability. Sebastian has plans to host events at his space featuring local artists and musicians. He is very intentional about creating a social experience at the shop and we believe that fundraising on the Kiva website will enable him to connect with his customers and the public in a meaningful way, building emotional investment in his business. His business is still in early stages and securing an interest free loan will put him in the best position to succeed. He does not require a large inflow of capital--the $5,000 dollars is the desired amount. He had credit difficulties as a student and has been working to repair his credit but is still largely shut out from conventional financing options.
