Personal Story

My name is Alejandra Baltazar and I am originally from a town named Apatzingan in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. Like many immigrants, I came to America seeking a better future for myself and my family. I had dreams and ambitions of growing professionally, and now that I have a son and a daughter I work hard everyday to be able to provide them with an education that will allow them to have the opportunities I never did.

I started working at TeamWorks a little over 2 years ago and the support I have found here has put me on the right track to achieve my goals. When I first started, I began as an assistant cleaner, but in just a few months I became what we call a “team captain”. As a team captain I lead the work in each house while also helping my teammate develop her skills and training. In July of this year I also attained one of three assistant manager positions and I am now doing payroll, bill pay, and other administrative tasks for the cooperative.

I am proud of my accomplishments at TeamWorks and I hope to continue growing professionally so I can be a better role model for my children.

Business Description

TeamWorks was founded in 2004 as a Cleaning Cooperative inspired by the business model of the Mondragon Cooperatives. At TeamWorks, we believe that worker-owned cooperatives could be a practical way to create a socially just and stable economy and, thus, see ourselves as business organization that can help root capital in local communities. At TeamWorks, we are able to provide higher wages and health benefits to our members while creating a working environment that is less stressful and physically demanding than in most other cleaning companies.
What we have found through this model is that when people are worker owners involved in the decision making process for the growth and development of their cooperative, we, as business, are able to guarantee higher standards of quality to our costumers. At the same time, we are also able to create opportunities for professional and self-growth for our members. Just in the past couple of years, we have been working to create assistant manager positions to give our members an opportunity to work outside of the cleaning profession. Today, three of our members work part time as Assistant Managers in Human Development, Accounts Receivable, and Accounts Payable.

What is the purpose of this loan?

For many years our cooperative was structured under a single manager. As our cooperative expanded, we found that this approach not only limited the cooperatives potential for growth (there are only so many teams one manager can supervise), but also did not align with the cooperatives underlying mission to provide opportunities for our members’ growth and development. Thus, we began to form a management team in which assistant manager positions were created and opened for our members to fill. Sustaining this management team is much more costly than the cooperative can afford at its current size and we project that we will need about $10,000 to invest in growing the cooperative to a size that can justify continuing this management structure. We believed that this goal is realistic because the rate of growth we projected we would need to achieve this is of about $2000 per month in new client revenues, which has been done in the past. In fact, since the team was implemented, almost five months ago, we have outperformed our projections and incurred no losses. We have confidence that we are going to be able to execute on this, but need this loan to help to have working capital to help us build capacity as we plan to.

TeamWorks is a worker-owned cleaning cooperative founded in 2004. Over the years, it has grown by popular demand and now includes more than ten members. This loan will finance the staff time for TeamWorks to respond to inquiries and quickly give estimates – the majority of which result in new customers. Certain members who were formerly limited to cleaning will be trained in business management skills such as HR, finance, and client development.
