Personal Story

I have been baking since I was a child with my grandmother and its always been the one thing that I did that made me happy. After becoming a mom I wanted to be there for my daughter when she came home from school. Although I have a degree in Accounting and Information Systems this was not a career I was in love with. I always wanted to own a business that I would enjoy and have the flexibility to raise my daughter and be a wife, which led me back to my passion of baking. This is the one thing I enjoy doing everyday. What is even more exciting is that my daughter Brooke loves to help too. So to continue with our generation of bakers and build a legacy for my daughter I now need to take my business to the next level, which is to open a store front. Desserts make people happy and I get to participate in the happiness of others when they buy my petit desserts. Now all I need is the financial help to make my dream a reality not just for me but for my family.

Business Description

Sweet Petit Desserts started in 2009. We are currently operating out of my home and licensed. I specialize in bite sized desserts that are made to order. I decided to start this business because of my passion for baking. My customers are retailers who want special treats for their guests as well as individual customers. I also wholesale to restaurants who don't have an in house pastry chef. I work with caterers and do events that primarily serve at least 150 people. All of our desserts are sold by the dozen and baked to order. My biggest challenge is space and I am in need of a larger space to bake and hire more employees. The goal for my business is to build a legacy for my family. The one thing that I'm proud of is that I have been able to grow the business by 50% in profits since our first year.

What is the purpose of this loan?

The loan will be used for the build out of the new location and for additional baking equipment, which cost approximately $10000. I will also need advertising and marketing funds of about $2000 - $3000. The new location will allow me to have the space that is needed to produce larger quantities of my product. I will have the opportunity to sell to the everyday customer, allow for customer pickups, and meet with potential and existing customers for events. This new location will afford me the visibility that I don't have at this time and provide tastings for new products. This loan will give me the opportunity to continue to grow my business. The impact of this loan on my family will be great because they help and support my business.

We met Taren in October of 2012. Taren completed and won the nine week BGV business course. She was named the Fall 2012 Bad Girl winner. We saw Taren grow from a business with scattered direction to a strong company expanding from a home business to her own storefront. We will have continued contact with Taren for years to come as she returns to support future BGV participants.
