Personal Story

I grew up in Southwest Detroit, a diverse urban community where I made friends of all nationalities. Growing up in 'Southwest', I learned the cultures of my friends, particularly those of Latino and Middle Eastern background, and I feel that the diversity of my upbringing helped shape me for a future where I am able to work with people of all walks of life. Being surrounded in my childhood by people who had to invent their own livelihoods by building businesses to provide for their families inspired me; so much so that I started selling Avon product at the age of 12. Over the years, I have had various hobbies that I've turned into small side business such as soap and candle making, lotions and perfumes. Now I have found my passion. I have found a business that will not only allow me to support myself, but will allow me to help women in my community who are experiencing hair loss.

Business Description

Kouture Hair Collection opened in April 2012 as a private hair salon for women who are suffering from hair loss. At Kouture we make 100% human hair wigs for women with cancer, alopecia, and lupus, among other medical conditions. With an estimated 21 million women in the United States suffering from hair loss, I decided to create Kouture as a place where women could come and access custom-made products in a warm, social environment. I dream of setting up locations in other cities including Chicago, Cleveland and Louisville.

I am most proud of the fact that I can help women with hair loss find wigs that look natural and are affordable.

What is the purpose of this loan?

Because I have an existing client base from my previous work on a business making hair extensions, I need materials to build my inventory for this new storefront and meet customer demand. This loan will enable me to purchase wigs, hair, wig caps and hair products such as hair color, shampoo and conditioner. It will also help me to advertise my business online and print brochures to market at trade shows and events.
