Personal Story

I grew up in Guatemala and moved to the United States in 1993. I was raised by my single mother, who worked extremely hard to support the two of us. I started working at a very young age in order to help make ends meet. Because of this, I was unable to attend school. When I got older, I decided to move to the United States to pursue new opportunities. I first moved to California and found work in construction. I then moved to Colorado and continued to gain experience in all types of construction work.

While immigrating to the United States did allow me many opportunities that I would not have had in Guatemala, finding jobs was not always easy. At times, it was a struggle to make enough money to survive and pay the rent. Adjusting to a new culture with new customs came with its own challenges as well, and I continue to struggle with my English skills. Because I have had to work long hours with low pay, it is difficult to make improving my English and taking courses a priority.

With my expertise in construction, remodeling, and general handyman work, I decided it might be a good idea to pursue my own business, instead of the continual struggle to find steady employment. I do all types of remodeling work, with a specialty in fixing garage doors. I wanted to become financially independent, while making my own schedule and earning more money.

In order to create a foundation for my business, I enrolled in the 13-week course Exito Para Negocios (Business Success) at Mi Casa Resource Center. With this course, I learned all that was needed to start my own business, including important techniques, along with how to identify different markets and my various competitors. I graduated from the course and although my business is still very small, Mi Casa helps me to continue moving forward with personal business counseling.

Business Description

I am the owner of Duarte Construction, offering home remodeling and repair services. I currently have one assistant, but hope to have two or three employees in the future as the business expands. With Mi Casa’s help, I have learned how to market my business and network to find clients.

In this economy, it can be hard to compete with larger construction companies. However, my services are usually offered at a more reduced rate, which helps me to gain more clients. While it is not always easy to find a sufficient amount of work for the business, it is slowly growing.

What is the purpose of this loan?

A loan from KIVA of $5000 would allow me to purchase a most needed truck for my business. I was in a car accident a few months back and my business truck was totaled. Because of this, I have to use my family's car for the business. I have to load and unload my tools so that my family can use it in the evenings and weekends. As you can imagine being in construction and remodeling, I have a lot of tools. It takes me a lot of time to get ready for the work day.
Typically my business earns between $2000 and $4000 each month, but with this loan, I estimate that I can make an additional $400-500 in revenue every month.
My family, on the other hand, will be very happy to have a clean car all to themselves!

Elmer's loan is endorsed by Women's Business Center at Mi Casa Resource Center. The information below explains why his trustee thinks Elmer is a great candidate for a Kiva Zip loan.

This is a very hard situation and thus would like a $ 5,000 loan to buy a truck for his business.
