Tell us about your relationship with this borrower.

Carlos and I started a non-profit together named "Angeles de Luz y Esperanza" whose mission is to help the most needy in our society, primarily Guatemalans and other Central Americans struggling for survival in this country. We appointed Carlos as President of the non-profit. We have been meeting weekly, speaking every other day focusing on the non-profit. However, now he opened a restaurant to help support the non-profit and he is totally consumed with the restaurant. He is still president of the non-profit. I am helping him make this restaurant a success.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Carlos is an ordained priest from Guatemala. He is waiting for confirmation from the Oakland Archdiosis. Carlos left Guatamala as an asylum because his life was in danger. His church was burned because he was organizing the peasants in the country-side and his friends told him to flee or lose his life. He is also founder and president of a college in the mountains of Guatemala, with an enrollment of about 25 students studing computers, agricultural and Mayan religions. He came to Oakland and is now organizing the Guatemalans in the Bay Area and preaching to local groups. He is a true entrepreneur and leader, seeking only the best for all people. He wants to use the restaurant to organize and to generate funds to support the Guatemala community and help suppor his college in Guatemala. I endorse him because he will be a success.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Carlos opened a restaurant named, El Rinconcito Chapin," on International Boulevard, on one of the busiest commercial areas. Very good location. He has his parishioners helping him out. With additional financing he expects to improve the patio area to increasing capacity for his patrons. Greater capacity will produce increased sales and greater success.

Carlos wants to showcase the variety of Guatemalan foods. And he is convinced that good food will bring everyone to his table. We do not expect real challenges in repaying the loan, unless sales were to drop dramatically. If so, Carlos will ask his parishioners to help him pay the debt. I have witnessed the support he can generate from the Guatemala community. I am very impressed.
