Collaborative Benefit

San Francisco, CA

Personal Story

I am a Business Analyst at KickLabs in San Francisco, an awesome place with awesome people to learn from. I am also a formerly incarcerated person. Currently I am an alumni member of The Last Mile (www.thelastmile.org) and the first of many “free” success stories to come from this program. I am also the founder of Collaborative Benefit.

I’ve been able to do and be where I am because of a lot of supportive people. Overcoming challenges was something that I had to learn how to do. My previous choices lead me to lose everything that I thought was once valuable including the skin off my own back. I've had new realization about life. Kids take choices, adults make decisions.

A good while ago someone taught me to ask myself, “What do I need to do here and now?” and then showed me how to apply and reapply that towards my life decisions. I’m very thankful for that lesson, it was the insight which showed me the value of our group experiences and how they can help each of us.

Since then, I’ve been a student; of life, books, people & the “self”.

I’m founding Collaborative Benefit because I believe that people who have been incarcerated and have learned that same lesson can benefit from a chance to share their experiences and return home empowered with the tools and drive to be valuable to society. I’m interested in helping people who don’t take choices anymore but rather made the decision to “Be the change you want to see in the world.” That means helping employers and communities be that change. That means helping people who are passionate about making a pivot in their lives and be that change too. In whole, that’s why this is called “Collaborative Benefit,” because we are all a part of that change we want to see.

That’s a bit about my past and what’s driven me to move forward into the future. As for today, I'm passionate about programming and have stayed up for many hours into the night, starting back during my time in a prison cell reading .Net books and loving it… now it’s open-source. Sites like Coursera, Khan Academy, and Stackoverflow; oh how I love thee! I love tech, appreciate transparency, and love to balance out my life with my family, my girlfriend, and her two beautiful girls.

Recently I’ve heard, “It's amazing how much you find you don't know, when you try to explain something to someone else. You find the gaps, you find stuff you didn't know you didn't know.” Interestingly enough, this has been teasing me to start blogging about everything I’m working on. I want to know what I don’t know and I like when people poke at my ideas. Let’s make things better. I’d love for this to come very soon.

On a closing note, I realize I’m very lucky to have been connected to people who have pushed, believed and helped me along the way. Based on what I know to be true, I am committed to helping one of the underserved challenges that I found to be most difficult, so that someone can have a great life like mine, after they’ve had life like mine.

We need to be a part of the community. We need mentors. We need to give back and break some stereotypes. We need a job.

I’ve walked the shoes, I know the pains, and I’m here to help.

Join me.

Business Description

Collaborative Benefit is an employment network designed to connect employers with distinguished leaders identified in top level reentry programs like The Last Mile. Our screened candidates have been qualified by completing the complete pyramid of rehabilitation including; high-technology training, academic development, life skills, personal growth, addiction recovery counseling, transformational work, victim impact and offender accountability awareness, as well as family reunification. Our member network is breaking stereotypes and bringing value back into our communities… Before they’re even released.

As a formerly incarcerated, I decided to start this network when I experienced for myself how difficult it was to have that initial conversation with a potential employer. Even for a person who's done the work, become a leader, is supported, and paid it forward; that initial conversation is very difficult to have. For most, it's a nerve-wracking challenge to adequately articulate their transformative process. The conversation is full of terms and names that mean nothing to the average employer.

Collaborative Benefit is key to solving that challenge, I believe in this because it's been my own biggest challenge. How do I introduce, promote, and control my own personal brand. How do I tell you, "I am an individual who happens to be more than the poorest decisions of my life." How do I tell you that I realize that this has nothing to do with your company and that… "I’m here to bring you value, not a life story."

I've been very fortunate to have been able to genuinely participate in many processes that were covered in topics like the ones above. I've seen what it takes to make a new and strong person out of the old. It's those people who I want to help. The ones who did so much- and just need a little more help to be successful. What they need is a chance and someone to take interest in bringing them through it.

That's what this network is for; and yet the real winners are the people and companies who hire out of Collaborative Benefit. They win because they're getting an eager person who is willing to give them their full 200%. Our candidates have got something to prove to their families, themselves, and to you.

Get a total package of screened, qualified, mentored individuals with a support network that extends to them and to you. We've got companies that can share and show you the way. We've got the know-how to connect you to all of the city, state and federal benefits. We've got the people, the access, and the way; now we need you.

What I'm most proud of are the compliments, support, and collaboration that this is getting from business and people. It's really they who have built it, and I who have come.

The purpose of this loan will be to fund upfront the total cost of site operations for Collaborative Benefit and securing our legal status. By paying for the services that will be needed in advance we will be able to secure the maximum cost savings without impacting capabilities. The site will be developed mostly by volunteers which also constrain the total cost of maintenance and ownership.

The impact of this loan will be greater than I can anticipate. Being able to empower a person to improve their life is amazing. Being able to empower a community to do just that is even better. Being able to connect the realization that anyone can make a difference is the ultimate. I want to spark that in our business communities, our urban communities, and in our inner-self community. This loan will do just that. There are a lot of benefits that need to be connected. This is the place where it happens, the reason we call ourselves Collaborative Benefit.
