Personal Story

I am a California native born in Los Angeles and raised in Oakland where I live now. I have always been entrepreneurial and hard working. From age 8 working in my Grand Aunt's vintage clothing store, to working as a teen in retail. Sometimes I worked in my dad's kennel/grooming salon sweeping, bathing doggies, or manning the cash register. I can't remember not working, even through college.

Education was a priority in my family. While attending high school I qualified for the Professional Development Program at UC Berkeley. PDP was designed for 'gifted' children of color, and required attendance on Saturdays during the school year and all summer. PDP had a profound impact raising my achievement bar, and providing a sampling of college life which was advantageous.

Some of my favorite memories are family road trip vacations to just about anywhere. Yosemite. Klamath Falls. Disneyland! That's why I love to travel now. Jordan, Italy, Syria, Zanzibar. I prefer to design my own trips, and get 'lost' in the experience. I enjoy learning from the people, music, culture and food of where I am visiting!

When I attended USC, I had planned to be a filmmaker (due to Star Wars primarily). But opportunity led me to Engineering. A tough major, it taught me critical thinking, analytical and logic skills. Another bar was raised.

My career has crossed many industries, from aerospace and banking, to telecommunications and now Internet consulting. My dream is to utilize the revolution of technology and virtual work to carve out a lifestyle business. Not everyone of us will be rich, but everyone can be happy. The more consistent our work style is to our lifestyle, the happier and more satisfied we all will be.

Business Description

I read an article in Harvard Business Review's blog that defined a term by developmental psychologist Howard Gardner - 'searchlight intelligence': "the ability to see connections across spheres and see opportunities to cross-pollinate (i.e., connect the dots)". I include here because it is my differentiator. This innate skill helps me find paths through impossibilities.

I left Corporate World during the 90s, and, building on my engineer, project/product manager, and sales experience, began freelancing in Silicon Valley. I loved the new frontier of discovery, no routine, building as we go. This became my incentive to start Winning Strategies.

Initially we started with simply providing websites. Quickly Internet options grew and as third party tools, cloud-based solutions and social media proliferated, businesses became overwhelmed. Many companies struggle to find the right solution mix to invest in that will work. I can apply my business analysis, technology know-how, and marketing experience to define the right Internet business strategy for companies, and build the solutions. Today I have a resource pool of experienced, reliable contractors. We collaborate to define best fit solutions, built on business analysis and Internet technology, to increase ROI, and improve operations.

The biggest challenge is finding those clients ready to invest in Internet improvements for better business. We target medium-size businesses (10-100+ employees, revenues from $500k-$50M+). Many don't understand the value of the Internet as a marketing and operational tool yet. Its still just a website.

What keeps me going is I truly enjoy the work, and have a lot of pride in our results. When we complete our projects clients are pleasantly surprised at what we deliver. My goal is to expose more clients to this model and grow.

Tell us about your relationship with this borrower.

I first met Cynthia when she came to our agency as a client long ago for our marketing advisory to retool her business plan for expansion. Over the years, our agency has hired Cynthia's company for specialty support & consultation for specific internet projects. After all these years of collegial relationship, I consider Cynthia a mentor & trusted advisor in her areas of expertise and even as a friend I enjoy and admire. I am in contact with Cynthia approximately once a month or so unless we're working together to support one of our clients when we'll likely be in touch daily.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Cynthia is quite simply a good human being with exceptionally excellent ethics and values, is devoted to her family and her community, serving on the Board of several worthy organizations where she devotes her time and resources.

She's a kind and compassionate person with a breadth of knowledge and experience enabling her to bring a broad perspective to all she cares about. I believe this is actually part of the reason she has such success on her projects.

In business, she's easy to work with, completely devoted to her clients, careful about choosing excellence in her team and totally reliable. She even came through on a planning project for us when she was sick one Christmas in order to meet our agency's deadline: That's dedication!

She's smart, thorough, interesting and able to think things through and clearly communicate them. Plus she has a good sense of balance between tech and business so her clients get excellent value from her services.

I've attended some classes she's taught and she's an excellent communicator and teacher, as well.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Cynthia has built a top notch company of experts to execute the strategic internet marketing advice she provides. Her business plan and future growth goals are sound and sensible for slow, careful growth in this economy. Her business model is organized for efficient and profitable expansion. She has the experience, support, teams and discipline to make it work. I've discussed her marketing for this growth and it makes good sense.

Like many worthy businesses, Cynthia's company is at a critical stage requiring a bit more capital (or kiva loan) to take the next steps for growth to acheive her next stage of goals. She has the ability, experience and brains to make it work, in my opinion.

This loan will also likely enable Cynthia to continue to devote time to her community projects helping prepare teens for employment along with her various other endeavors promoting math & science careers for girls.

Her challenges will be using somewhat lower cost contractors to conduct pieces of the work since it's just a small loan. But with her teaching and training ability, I'm sure she'll organize proper training and supervision to make this a successful experience.

Cynthia has access to many colleagues and resources for any support she needs. Plus she has an intelligent plan already in place for paying back her loan.

This is a very worthy company for a Kiva loan!
