Personal Story

I grew up in Stuttgart, which is a small town in southern Arkansas. It was a wonderful place to grow up, and I distinctly remember the wonderful shops from my childhood that were located on and around Main Street. Those small business owners were heroes to me and I dreamed of owning my own business someday.

During my high school and college years, I worked in retail shops to earn extra money. I loved retail so much that it became my career. I have since been a manager and buyer for several upscale boutiques over the years and I co-owned a clothing and gift store with my sister, Amy Davis. We started our business by renting a room in the Shoppes on Woodlawn in 2003 when they first opened. I did custom children's paintings and we also went to market to find unique gift ideas for children. In April of 2005 we opened Lauren J., a boutique for women and children located in historic Park Hill in North Little Rock.

I had to close my store late in 2006 for personal reasons and have recently been working in the non-profit sector, which is how I learned about Kiva.

My dream is to someday have my own storefront again. I know I can make it happen!

Business Description

Lulu and Livvy is currently a home based business that specializes in custom handmade ballet flats in solids and prints.

Even though I have been out of the retail business for a few years, I have to admit it is in my blood and I have been looking for a product to inspire me. I want to make a difference. I believe I have found it with the Limondado shoes.

My biggest challenge right now is the fact that I need a little capital to buy enough product to make a statement and have samples of all the sizes, colors and prints. I have sold a few pairs to family and friends and they love them!

My goal is to create a website where customers can go and view samples and "try on" and purchase the shoes. I also plan to rent a space at the Shoppes on Woodlawn in Little Rock, Arkansas to gain some local exposure. The Shoppes made the "Where to Shop" section in the August edition of Southern Living and is a wonderful, unique place to create my shop within a shop with very little overhead.

What is the purpose of this loan?

I will use $2300.00 of this loan to have a logo created and website designed. The rest will be spent on purchasing product so that I can have enough to make a statement in my "Shop".

A website will help make shopping easier for my on-line customers and I will be able to drive sales using Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I also believe having an actual physical location will help drive sales via word of mouth and traditional marketing.

This loan will help me to "launch" my business. I know I have a unique product that is well made. Once my customer makes an initial purchase, they will want one in every color!

The money will give me the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of teens and young adults who are struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. That is my motivation to succeed.

Jayme's day-job is with the Downtown Little Rock Partnership (DLRP). Team Etsy Little Rock (ELR) has cultivated a wonderful working-relationship with the DLRP and the fantastic individuals that work there. We (ELR and the DLRP) have collaborated at their annual Food Truck Festival (FTF) for two years now and at our most recent annual festival, Jayme attended, representing the DLRP. We first formally met and got to know each other at that time but previously attended some FTF meetings together.

Jayme's business, Lula and Livvy, is an amazing project. She is partnering with Don Otto, of La Limonada in Guatemala, to help expand his business into the United States, giving his amazing project a broader audience. Don's shoes are made to order in a tiny workshop by young at-risk artisans that Don has taken under his wing to teach an invaluable trade to... shoe-making. The workshop is located in the infamous ghetto "La Limonada" in the heart of Guatemala City. Don not only teaches the art/trade of shoe-making to these at-risk youths, but he also shows them the way back to forgiveness, love and restoration. With each pair purchased, individuals are helping transform a life, a family, a neighborhood and a nation.
