Personal Story

My parents immigrated from Mexico City when I was very young. Our family moved around often but wherever we lived, my parents would find ways to have a garden and cook creatively with what we could afford. My father was an amazing cook and we enjoyed eating as a family. Meals were always together, at the table or at my grandma Mama Chello’s house. Her kitchen filled with the smell of warm tamales, hand made tortillas and menudo; all the yummy goodness my grandma would always make. Food was the ingredient that kept our family strong.

However, shortly after my 16th birthday, my father was killed, which devastated my entire family. As the oldest of four daughters, I was immediately thrown into the role of caring and cooking for my siblings. At the very young age of 17, I became a mother. Long story short, I went on to have three very talented, athletic and wonderful kids. Growing up,I watched my parents find creative ways to make a living, eventually opening up a children’s clothing store and a florist shop. In my early years, I remember selling burritos out of our car and tacos from our home.

This early experience in life molded my love for food and pushed my desire to have my own business. To care for my children I obtained an Associates Degree in Paralegal Studies and worked as a Paralegal for about 10 years until my kids became self-sufficient. It was then when I decided to follow my passion for food. I trained as a chef, and graduated first in my class at National Culinary School in December of 2011

For years I cooked on a budget and always seemed to be the only parent in my neighborhood to shop and eat healthy. During soccer practice, I’d bring bananas, oranges or home-baked goods. On trips to the beach I was the one with the fresh fruits and veggies. Because I was the oldest and started cooking at a very young age, I really cared about what kids ate. I became an open kitchen for the local kids, and always acted as an advocate for them, making sure they weren’t hungry or being mistreated. I enjoyed practicing my skills on them; they were honest and wouldn’t eat anything that didn’t taste good. I learned how to cook healthy on a budget and as I honed my skills, people began noticing.

Now that my kids are grown, it’s my turn to showcase my talents and follow my dreams of owning my very own cafe. I believe in food and its power. I want to create a special place where people can turn to for a healthy alternative. I know what it takes – I’ve been there. We just have to make this dream come alive.

Business Description

Set in the small, yet budding beach town of Imperial Beach, Northside Shack juice bar will open its doors in the coming year and will be the first provider of local, healthy, organic when possible, vegetable and fruit derived beverages and foods in Imperial Beach. Healthy and affordable food options for this culturally and economically diverse community is what this town desperately needs. I believe this can easily be obtained by minimizing overhead costs, reducing and recycling waste, sourcing from local purveyors and utilizing what is currently in harvest for the season.
Imperial Beach will soon be the home of Marriot's newest boutique beachfront resort called Pier South, a block away from Northside Shack and is expected to bring much needed tourism and economic growth to this small town. The organic and local food sourced restaurant and juice bar industries are niche markets and there is a huge gap to fill in Imperial Beach. Currently, there are no limited service restaurants nor juice bars that provide alternatives to dairy based drinks and fatty foods.

Imperial Beach regulars, tourists, surfers, and military personnel will be able to enjoy locally sourced vegetable and fruit juices, smoothies, and beverages along with kale salads, hearty soups and organic small bites. Fresh bread, cheeses, cured meats and artisan goods will also be available for purchase by vacationers and locals wanting to picnic at the beach.

This has been my dream for a very long time and KIVA could help me make this a possibility and bring healthy food options wanted and needed by so many here in Imperial Beach.

What is the purpose of this loan?

The purpose of the $5,000 Kiva Zip loan is for permit transfers and the purchase of additional equipment such as a high powered juicer in addition to supplies needed to operate. The $5,000 Kiva Zip loan will allow for Northside Shack to open its doors as well as increase revenue and profit.

With help from the Kiva Zip loan, Northside Shack will become a reality when in the past all other funding methods have been near impossible. This loan will lead to a positive impact on my life and the lives of my children as well as those in my community by offering healthy alternatives to this culturally diverse and economically challenged community.

Pamela's loan is endorsed by WILDCOAST. The information below explains why her trustee thinks Pamela is a great candidate for a Kiva Zip loan.
How long have you known this person?

3 years - 5 years

Tell us about your relationship with this borrower.

I know Pamela from her work in the community and her role as a super mom to her son Ismael and daughter Aries, who both volunteer with WILDCOAST and have participated in our events for over five years and who surf with my two sons (and me). I have also been involved in supporting Pamela's attempt to secure permits for her business in Imperial Beach. We are in contact via Facebook, on email and in person.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Pamela is a very smart and determined entrepreneur who has exactly the type of tenacious and passionate personality to succeed. What I find impressive about Pamela is her focus and drive and ability to think outside the box regarding the need to secure financial support for her business plan (which is a very good one). She has bettered herself through her education and desire to create a meaningful business for her family and our community, which I think is very cool and inspiring.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Pamela is proposing the development of the Northside Shack Juice Bar in Imperial Beach, California. Imperial Beach is one of only blue-collar beach towns left in Southern California and is located just north of the U.S.-Mexico Border. The Northside Shack is exactly the kind of business this cool little beach town needs. The Kiva Zip loan will provided much needed capital to jump start opening the business, but more importantly, it gives Pamela the credibility in the donor community that her business plan has been vetted and she has a larger seal of approval from the national and international donor community. A Kiva Zip loan has really given her the confidence to move forward in this business.
