Personal Story

Chef Ramni Levy’s unique knish creations are a reflection of his eclectic background in fashion, event planning, and culinary curiosity. Ramni moved to San Francisco in the late 1990s after stops in two other premier food cities, New Orleans and Manhattan. He opened Bistro 1650, a small restaurant in the City’s Richmond District. Ramni successfully sold Bistro 1650 to move into catering which led him to found King Knish in October 2012, an “old world dish with a new world twist”.

During Ramni's Bistro 1650 years he learned more through experimentation and research. In 2005 Ramni sold Bistro 1650 to fully dedicate himself to the art of catering. After the past few years in the private catering industry, Ramni launched King Knish at San Francisco's popular 2012 Fleet Week Event, serving knish to leaders from some of the Bay Area’s premier business, community, and civic organizations.

Ramni's vision for King Knish is to take his unique twist on this traditional Eastern European food and introduce it to new audiences in major cities through events, boutique food purveyors as well wholesale and retail distribution.

In just one year, through his passion, dedication, and experience as a self-made chef, Ramni has transformed King Knish from an idea into a tasty reality that 1,000s of people throughout the Bay Area have come to enjoy.

I am excited to introduce this new venture to Kiva Zip lenders and hope that they will share in my continued development and growth.

Business Description

King Knish is the only Bay Area artisan food producer dedicated to making the popular Eastern European snack food. Our delicious knish is a puff pastry that is always baked, never fried, consisting of a flaky outer crust that is filled with a variety of mouth watering flavor combinations from the classic potato knish to pastrami and potato. King Knish blends forward-thinking recipes with “Old World” history and traditional techniques of making knish to create a truly unique product with broad market appeal.

King Knish successfully launched last year at a premier Fleet Week event in San Francisco and has been growing ever since.

The biggest challenge is creating awareness for this Eastern European snack food.

We serve corporate, retail and individual customers who have a taste for creative, innovative, healthily local food alternatives.

The principal goal of King Knish is to fuel exponential growth, awareness and education of this contemporary product line.

We are extremely proud of the excitement, enthusiasm and acceptance of this Eastern European snack food with a twist, King Knish.

This loan will further validate this type of unique food business in the food industry.

Ramni was referred to the Office of Small Business by the San Francisco Small Business Development Center (SBDC), a non-profit economic development organization and partner of the city's Office of Economic and Workforce Development and Office of Small Business. Ramni came to the Office of Small Business seeking general business assistance for a start-up catering and events business that he was launching, as well as a number of other business ideas he had in mind. Since his first visit in April of 2012, Ramni has kept in touch with his case manager at the Office of Small Business, providing monthly, if not more frequent updates, on his business developments.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Bursting with passion, energy and ideas, Ramni is also diligent and focused on his goals to formalize and grow his food business. Ramni has a can do attitude that does not let up, coupled with an overall friendliness and likability that makes working with him easy and desirable. Ramni is also a very kind, caring, and compassionate person who is always thinking about ways to pay it forward before even scoring the next job or contract. Over the year and a half that I've known Ramni, he has constantly expressed his sincere gratitude for all of the support he has received from the various organizations and people he has met during the development of his business, which further drives his desire to succeed and give back. For these reasons and because he has a great product, I am thrilled to endorse Ramni for a Kiva Zip loan.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Ramni Levy Catering and Events is a full service catering company, offering corporate and private catering, small and large. From catering lunch for 10 employees of a small start-up company in the South of Market, to large scale corporate parties of 200+, Ramni Levy Catering and Events does it all.
Chef Ramni recently launched King Knish, a division of Ramni Levy Catering and Events, which is now locally producing one of Chef Ramni's signature offerings, fresh baked knish! King Knish can be found at local festivals and events, and at the following online storefronts: Zaarly, Good Eggs, and Open Sky.

Given Ramni Levy Catering and Events growth, and with King Knish's expansion into the online market place, Ramni is in need of a delivery vehicle. A Kiva Zip loan will help Ramni purchase a much needed delivery vehicle for his growing business. Being able to purchase a delivery vehicle will enable Ramni to fill more orders and cater more events further growing his business, and ultimately create jobs. This will eventually free up some time in the kitchen allowing him to give back to the community which he hopes to do by teaching workshops and speaking to others with similar interests who are just getting started.
