Personal Story

I am focused on building a sustainable business from the ground up that my children can be proud of and potentially lend their efforts as they grow older. I started baking bread and delivering to my neighbors three years ago, and have built up my business bit by bit to where I now have over 300 customers. I am ready to move to the next level. I currently work three days a week as a bartender, and three days a week on the business. I also work taking care of my youngest child.

My next step in growing the business is working out of my own baking space full time. This will allow me to grow my wholesale business and have greater control over the quality of the product.

Business Description

I started baking artisan bread when my oldest was still at home. I made everything from scratch at home and when I finally achieved a bread that rose up and wasn't a rock of dough, I knew that I wanted to own a bakery.

I built the bakery up from delivering bread to ten neighbors each week to having an online subscription service that now serves over 300 people. The biggest challenge is that the rent I am paying on a commercial kitchen is just for one day of baking.

When I have my own space to bake then I can produce proportionately more bread for the rent I will be paying. I am committed to producing handmade, organic loaves of bread that sustain communities. The name Fox and Lion is a blend of my two family names, DeVoss and Levine paired down to the animal. Family tradition and sustenance is at the core of my business.

What is the purpose of this loan?

This loan will help pay for equipment and permitting costs to open my own wholesale bakery. Once I am working out of my own space then the limit on the amount of bread I can make in proportion to the amount I am paying for rent will increase and I will begin to show a profit quickly. This will help with each step of growing the business financially. I will be able to bake bread full time and fulfill wholesale accounts as well as expand my subscription service.
