Personal Story

I grew up in Atlanta, GA. I went to a private, 95% white, Christian, college preparatory school. I got an excellent education and also a good understanding of what it was like to be the "other" in a community. I was the one person at my school who could really move freely between the minority and majority worlds.

At an early age, I recognized the power of art to overcome prejudice and I set my sights on being a filmmaker. I saw films as the most universal way to share ideas. After getting a degree in film and video at Georgia State University, I moved to San Francisco to attend a film production school. I completed the film program in 2009 and began making short films. About a year later I also became interested in photography so I bought a camera and started teaching myself to use it.

I started a street photography project in 2011 called "Souls of San Francisco" to capture and document the stories of the Bay Area community. Since then, I've taken thousands of street portraits/interviews. I post these stories daily on a blog that has thousands of followers where we celebrate each other.

Business Description

"Souls of San Francisco" is a street photography project I began in 2011. Over the last 2 years I've photographed and interviewed thousands of people throughout the Bay Area. I started the project to combine my desire to create art with social change.

"Souls" has become it's own interconnected network allowing our community to stay afloat of all the happenings of the city and it's residents.

The biggest challenge has been to do the project day in and day out but I've found the process of connecting with everyday people on the street to be so rewarding.

I'd like to print books of all of these pictures and stories, create t-shirts and hoodies to sell. Just continue to spread awareness of what we're doing with "Souls of San Francisco."

The project has really started to gain momentum, in the last year alone we've been featured in The Huffington Post, SF Gate, and NPR. "Souls" is also now a bi-weekly column in SF Weekly.

What is the purpose of this loan?

I would like this loan to print books, and a clothing line for the project. The books and clothes are printed to order. The more money we have, the more books and clothesthat we can print. I successfully ran a Kickstarter campaign to produce a small run of books earlier this year and I'd like to continue to make products to grow the brand.

This will be the first big cash infusion into the business and I'd like it to take this to the next level. Have it be an operation that makes money and make it my full time job.

Garry Bowden, a San Francisco based filmmaker and photographer, approached our local designer collective, California Made Mercantile, (www.camademtl.com) in early Spring 2013. At this time we began to carry his book (in both soft and hardcovers), Souls of San Francisco, featuring street portraits (and many accompanying stories) of residents of San Francisco from different neighborhoods all across the city. Additional products to the book: magnets, tees and totes are also carried to this date.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Everyone who I talk to who has met Garry has made the same comment "Garry has such a magnetic personality!" So it's no wonder he is able to approach so many different people from such different walks of life in a very metropolitan city such as San Francisco and obtain from them their story AND their photo.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Garry Bowden started Souls of San Francisco as a street photography project in 2011 to document the diversity and culture of the Bay Area. Going to different neighborhoods all over the city, he photographed and interviewed people to capture their stories. Over the last two years the project has built an international following of thousands of people, through social media and other outlets, who have come together to celebrate our culture. Garry expressed "(that) through this conversation we're becoming more connected and open about our vulnerabilities, fears, triumphs, hopes and dreams."

The project has been featured in The Huffington Post, the SF Gate, and NPR. In early 2013 the first volume of work was released for the project to great success. Garry would like to continue to expand awareness of the project and the core values of it: consciousness, communication, vulnerability, acceptance, and hope. The plan to do that is through a 2nd book, and a line of Souls of San Francisco merchandise consisting of t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags etc.
California Made Mercantile would like to endorse Garry Bowden in order to help him in attaining these further goals in 2013.
