Personal Story

I have always been drawn towards design, furniture, personal expression and helping people. My mom encouraged me whenever we moved (7 times growing up) which helped me cope with different environments. I'm sensitive to environments and believe that everyone deserves to feel comforted, safe, and valued when at home.

My true nature: When I was in college I juggled doing community service and working in small woman-owned businesses (furniture, flowers, bistro) while getting my education. I continue to do what I love - and help people through all of my efforts. I'm proud of this and hope it inspires other people who feel "different or unique" to hang in there and find their way.

This is my time to create my own signature business in a wonderfully diverse town. I can't think of better way to pull my experiences together to make a sustainable life for myself and my son.

Business Description

I opened my own shop 2 years ago in a charming neighborhood business district in SF. I sell furniture and art; an eclectic mix that I carefully curate based on my 20 years of experience. When my shop is discovered people are pleasantly surprised to see how accessible the prices are and how well the pieces will fit into their homes. I inspire people with my creative displays and knack for creating great visual vignettes.

I have a diverse customer base - from people who take many buses and ask for a layaway, to the local socialite. I've had wonderful people from all walks of life come in. It's my greatest pleasure when people realize the shop is really for them - not just for people with loads of money.

The greatest challenge I face is that our neighborhood can lack foot traffic. The other current challenge is the stores around me have either closed or are changing. The foot traffic we have is often parents with their kids or people busy running in between appointments. My sales would be far better if more people simply walked into the shop.

I am incredibly proud that my shop is welcoming, has excellent, ever-changing pieces of furniture, art, and jewelry... and it's one of a kind. Truly I am unique and my shop reflects that quality in a beautiful way.

What is the purpose of this loan?

I've wanted to take the next steps in marketing the shop by having a painted sandwich board sign made and lettering on the windows.

I've priced these and know exactly what I need. The look would match my overhead sign - which looks classic and stylish. It would read something like this: "Welcome!" and would show a hand pointing in the direction of the door with a brief description of the shop/hours and finally a note that "children and dogs welcome when accompanied by an adult" ( because I think far too many people assume they can't come in).

The windows: this area of lettering would help expand what the shop has to offer beyond "art and antiques"
The words on window #1 : Antique, Vintage and Modern Furniture
The words on the window #2: Art, Objects d'Art, Gifts/Jewelry

The last item I would make is a banner/signage with the Poetica logo and contact info. I will set up a mini-shop booth at local furniture flea markets in the spring.

Traci offers a wide array of furniture, art, and antiques for the home. Her neighborhood store carries high quality, unique, and affordable products. This Kiva Zip loan will help Traci and her business' marketing efforts by helping her to purchase more marketing materials, so that her store can clearly stand out in a corridor with some vacant sites nearby and encourage more walk-in traffic. Given Traci's tenacity in leading the efforts to personally revitalize the Sacramento Street merchant corridor, I know Traci can tackle any challenges that may come along.

A loan of $2,500 helps me to make the extra signage I need to draw business to Poetica Art and Antiques. I offer more than my name implies and need to catch people's attention better when they drive, walk, or bike past the shop.
