Personal Story

Born in Paris, France, I grew up in the 18th District (Arrondissement 18 - Butte-Montmartre). I came to the United States in the 80s and have lived in California ever since. Since moving to the U.S., I've started several small businesses, most recently, the Abundant Market--a European style cafe/deli/wine and specialty shop. I entered into this endeavor with my partner, Diane Kennon, who is originally from Boston, but has lived in the Bay Area for the last 18 years. This is Diane's first business.

Diane and I share a love of good food and good wine, and impart this love into our business. Our dream is to create a financially successful business, where people can stop for a cup of coffee, pick up prepared gourmet lunches and dinners, and locate hard-to-find specialty items. We strive to supply our customers with the highest quality items.

Business Description

The Abundant Market caters to local businesses and residents in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco. After 20 plus years in the food industry, and with my past retail experience, I decided to work towards this new endeavor. For some time, I had envisioned a cafe/market where people could gather for a cup of coffee, purchase single-serving gourmet meals to go, buy a bottle of wine, etc. In late 2012, I came came across a failing business in a fantastic location. I knew this was the space and location I wanted for my business. I proposed my idea to Diane, my partner, and she agreed. In March, 2013, we opened the Abundant Market.

Although very rewarding, there have been many challenges; namely, finding, hiring, and retaining competent staff and finding the finances to grow the business. Still, we are very proud of what we have accomplished so far. We are complimented daily by patrons about the look of the market and the quality of our products.

What is the purpose of this loan?

The money will be used for marketing purposes--updating the website, printing flyers, and designing, printing and circulating our new catering menu. $5,000 should cover all of these expenses.

Increased exposure will drive business and, therefore, will increase revenues/profits. Awareness of our catering service will also add to revenue and profits.

This loan will help to increase our sales.

The increase revenue obtained with the help of this loan will help secure the future of my business, which will have a huge impact on the happiness and peace of mind of my family.

Patrick's loan is endorsed by Supervisor Mark Farrell. The information below explains why his trustee thinks Patrick is a great candidate for a Kiva Zip loan.

Tell us about your relationship with this borrower.

My office manager, Margaux Kelly, and myself have frequented the business since Patrick and his wife opened the business just over 5-months ago.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Patrick is a dedicated, hard-working, and creative business professional that has been in San Francisco for over 20-years in the food/hospitality industry when he first immigrated here from Europe.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Patrick and his wife own their store, Abundant Market. Abdundant Market offers niche food and drink choices for their customers with a European influence. Patrick has expressed a willingness to potentially add a catering service to his business that could expand his customer base within and outside of San Francisco. Unfortunately, traditional bank loans have been hard for him and his wife to access, and the opportunity to access capital through Kiva Zip would give his business the opportunity to further grow and succeed.
