Personal Story

I’ve been an artist all my life, learning to paint from my mother and singing a solo at age five. I sometimes feel I should’ve been born during the renaissance, as I’m passionate about performing, writing, and painting.
I was heavily involved in theatre for 12 years, as a director, actor, singer, writer and producer. One of my greatest accomplishments was organizing, directing and securing funding for a traveling production of the musical “Heidi” that toured to over 2500 students. I wrote and directed eight mystery dinner shows for “Audacity Productions”, a traveling troupe. I also taught theatre to youth through Lane Arts Council for seven years, managed the Cottage Theatre full time for two years, and worked part time in the LCC Theatre Dept. researching and writing grants for two years.

I’ve always dabbled in visual arts, from batik to mosaic tile. An avid learner, I was able to teach myself. While attending college in my thirties, thinking of an arts administration career, I finally had the chance to take a variety of art classes. My focus soon switched from performing arts to visual arts.

To the surprise of many who knew me as the administrator type, I switched gears completely and attended tattoo school. About eight years ago I secured my license and opened a studio. Surprisingly, the paths I’ve traveled through working with non-profits, producing, teaching, and immersion in performing and visual arts, laid the ground work for the biggest challenge in my life…owning a business! I feel blessed to have a career where I’m paid to do art. Two years ago I added a school to my studio, through a painstaking, year-long curriculum development process. I’m thrilled to now use my skills to teach tattooing and I envision developing the first comprehensive tattoo textbook!

Business Description

After finishing tattoo school I opened Garden of Ink in 2007, starting out in a small room at the back of my partner’s graphic design business. In the beginning it was just me, slowly building up my skills and customers. I quickly discovered that I loved tattooing: the creativity, artistry and collaboration with clients. Two years later I moved to a bigger building and took over the business when my partner moved. Having multiple sources of income was more feasible, being in a small town and graphic design meshed nicely with custom tattooing.

Things were going pretty well when the economic downturn put a huge strain on the business. I struggled to stay afloat financially. Fortunately I worked with eDev, took classes, learned more about marketing and hung on. During the rough time, I decided to become licensed as a private career school so I could increase my income and share my knowledge. I secured an IDA matching savings grant to assist with the start-up. Getting licensed was a difficult process from developing the curriculum to completing the copious paperwork required. Finally in November 2011 I took on my first three students.

It has been an amazing experience to watch others go through this process and be part of assisting them in developing their new art careers. I’ve gotten great feedback for being a comfortable, friendly, quality place to learn. Now I visualize putting together a comprehensive textbook specifically for tattooers. This move toward higher standards in tattoo education will raise the bar even more for tattoo artists, in an industry where the training has often consisted of an abusive style apprenticeship.

What is the purpose of this loan?

Through my career as a tattoo artist and then eventually opening a licensed tattoo school, I realized there was no sort of textbook or thorough curriculum out there. The field of tattooing in so many ways has never been taken seriously and has had a reputation for attracting uneducated people in the past. Recently, many top level tattooers have mastered this art form to such a degree it seems silly not to consider it fine art. I stumbled upon the idea of turning my tattoo, art, and teaching experience into a professional textbook.

This will advance my career in many ways: being published will increase my income, open doors to more advanced tattooers, legitimize tattooing as a career choice, and enhance the overall experience for tattoo apprentices. This will support my further exploration of all forms of tattooing, and I will be creating a product to put in the hands of eager learners.

The state of Oregon is the only state in the nation that makes completion of tattoo school a requirement for being licensed. By September 2014, the Department of Education will be requiring all tattoo schools to demonstrate high quality instructional design programs, enhancing the curriculum even more. In addition, Oregon Health Licensing Agency has created a series of laws and rules that go far beyond the requirements of any other state. In this environment it seems taking the seriousness of tattooing one step further is very appropriate.

This is a terrific opportunity for me, because my experience in tattooing, art, teaching, writing, and graphic design uniquely positions me to offer a solid textbook, already completed, to tattoo schools.

I've already written a well-received curriculum, now to create a textbook would be incredible! Thank you! :)
