Personal Story

Hey all! My name is Seth Gold, a 22 year old entrepreneur from Raleigh, NC! I hail from South Windsor, CT where I grew up through High School. You could say I was born with the entrepreneurial bug. Something within me has always known I was meant to create and innovate. The working-class community I grew up in placed a huge emphasis on service to others and helping those in need. Being immersed in an environment around helping those in need, giving back stuck with me throughout life. I remember volunteering at an after school program for Africa refugees. It was here while helping kids with their homework, participating in drum circles, but most importantly talking and sharing stories with these kids that I realized how good I really had it. It was that moment I recognized the need and drive to help those less fortunate than I. I am now a recent college graduate of High Point University in NC. I graduated High Point magna cum lade with a double major in Entrepreneurship and Marketing. I’m ready to take my two passions of business and social giving to create a company that gives back to those in need and makes a positive difference. I have had the honor of competing and placing in a few different business plan competitions including: High Point University’s Business Plan Competition, The Charlotte Venture Challenge, and The Global Student Entrepreneurship Awards.

Business Description

Bamboo Apparel is a clothing company committed to helping people leave their mark on someone’s life, while reducing the one they leave on the planet . Single actions can make a difference and together by lending a hand, we can change our tomorrow. We saw problems throughout the world that we felt needed to be changed: the harmful effects typical textile manufacturing has on the planet and the number of people without adequate clothing to wear. With this in mind, we decided a bottom line was not enough. Bamboo Apparel strives for a triple bottom line including People and Planet! We plan to help our planet environmentally while clothing people in need!

Bamboo Apparel produces clothing made from bamboo! Many are not aware but cotton is extremely dangerous for our health and environment! Cotton takes up 2.5% of the world’s farm land but uses 25% of the world’s pesticides resulting in thousands of deaths and millions of poisonings! Bamboo is pesticide free, can grow up to 4ft a day, and feels like a mix of silk and cashmere…or as we like to say “heave n”! Bamboo Apparel also has a social mission to help clothe those in need! To do this we use a simple yet effective model! Every time a Bamboo Apparel product is purchased, Bamboo Apparel matches the sale with a donation of the same item bought and donates it to an orphanage around the world! This year we are donating to orphanages in Uganda! We solely donate to orphanages strategically! Orphanages strictly work off donations and do not buy kids clothes. We do not want to hurt an already depressed local economy by giving away free shirts to an entire town…someone living there makes and sells shirts!

By shopping smart and coming together “Our hands can change our tomorrow”.

What is the purpose of this loan?

I am asking for $5,000 to make our first big custom order! We found a partner that is looking for custom shirts for their event and wants Bamboo Apparel to make them. Each shirt they get will be matched with a donation to an orphanage around the world of another shirt. $5,000 will cover about 75% of the cost and Bamboo Apparel will be able to cover the rest!

This purchase will not only produce direct revenue from its sale, but result in a lot of marketing, and will also be clothing those in need.

This loan will help bring us to the next level! It will create steady revenue , marketing, and help us be able to make more custom orders in the future.

Seth's loan is endorsed by Richard Purcell. The information below explains why his trustee thinks Seth is a great candidate for a Kiva Zip loan.
When and how did you meet this borrower?

I met Seth when he was presenting at Queen City Forward for the Social Enterprise Competition affiliated with Charlotte Venture Challenge. He eventually won the competition, beating out hundreds of applicants. It was clearly evident Bamboo Apparel was a perfect fit for a Kiva Zip loan because of the company's narrative, traction, and sustainability.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Seth has a very laid back demeanor, but a killer business sense. Whenever he introduces his business he always highlights the social mission of giving back to orphans in Uganda. His altruism speaks volumes. In addition, I have personally introduced him to trusted associates, and they all rave about his character and ambition.

Please describe how a Kiva Zip loan to this Borrower will have a significant and positive social impact on their life.

Bamboo Apparel has a vision that truly exemplifies the triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit. His bamboo clothes are better for the environment because bamboo grows without the need for pesticides. For each shirt sold, he donates one to an orphan in Uganda. Both of these pillars will lead him to Profit. Seth's success will be measured in how many children he can clothe and how many acres of farm land that can be saved from being laden with pesticides.

Please describe why this Borrower is requesting a loan from Kiva, as opposed to a traditional loan.

As a Social Entrepreneur and a recent college grad, most traditional funding sources (bank loans, angel investors, etc) are weary of extending loans because of the increased risk. Seth is also hesitant to share equity of his company to investors, and bank interest rates (if he's even lucky enough to get a loan) to a 23 year old Social Entrepreneur with little credit history are too high to even consider.

What are the challenges that you expect this borrower to face in repaying their loan?

For such a relative small amount, I have no issues Seth will repay in a timely manner. Dozens of judges from entrepreneur competitions all around the country have already voted with confidence. Now its time for Kiva Zip lenders to do the same.
