Personal Story

Hello my name is Hoang Pham but I am better known as Chino. I was born in Vietnam in 1973. My Mom and Dad came to the United States when I was about two years old. I grew up in the Pico Gardens projects located in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles. When my Dad passed away I didn't have a role-model or anybody to look up to. I was eleven when I first got into trouble. I was in and out of prison. I've been at Homeboy Industries for three years now. Homeboy Industries has helped make me who I am today. I have learned to understand myself and the real world. I would like to set a good example for my 14 year old son. Starting my own business is a way to make a living but my goal is to one day open more locations and help create jobs so I can give people like myself a chance and hope just like Father Greg and Homeboy Industries did for me.

Business Description

Chino's Dogs will sell hot dogs on gourmet Homeboy Industries bread. The quality of products and the variety offered will set us apart from the competition. We would like to incorporate new trending recipes such as veggie dogs and gluten-free products.

Chino's Dogs is based out of LA County. Location is important and we are currently in the works of securing two prime locations. We also participate in different food events in the Koreatown and Chinatown areas. We will cater to basically any hungry person out there, but our main target group will be college students.

I met Chino at Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles. He has held many positions at the various Social Enterprise companies of Homeboy Industries. This included making presentations at schools, office work and employment in their bakery. He has accompanied me to a bank function attended by government leaders, corporate leaders and celebrities as a way of letting him network with all in attendance and represent Homeboy Industries. We maintain contact by phone and in person 1-2 times a week. He has often sought me out for advice regarding this business venture.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Chino always has a happy greeting for me when we meet as well as with others. His smile and his happy conversation are infectious. He is insightful and realizes the renewal that is happening in his life by being associated with Homeboy Industries. So he is all the more determined to reach achivements in his life. He is goal oriented and has a great desire and the confidence to be successful.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Chino and his girlfriend, Victoria, have undertaken the venture of a being a hot dog vendor called Chinodogs! He has even had a friend create a logo picture which will be silkscreened on a t-shirt. I've seen it and when his business takes off, I can see big future sales of his t-shirts to customers. He has made contact with a representative of Cal State LA to secure hot dog sales priveleges on this campus of about 40,000 students. Once he gets business rolling here,he plans on eventually including Loyola Marymount where he has also made contact. Various after school vending sites are also on his agenda. This loan will allow him to secure his final health department license and provide for start up food costs.
