Personal Story

I grew up on a farm in Western Pennsylvania. My father was a jack-of-all-trades, switching from coal mining to steel mills to lumber yards, wherever there was work. My mother was a photojournalist for the local newspaper, until she started selling insurance to have more flexibility in her schedule, and time to spend with her three children. During my high school years, I started making more trips to the city of Pittsburgh, and quickly fell in love.
After college, where I studied in New York City, Montreal, and Seoul, Korea, I did an AmeriCorps VISTA year in Rochester, New York. After my service year, I settled in Pittsburgh and have begun to carve out a life for myself. I worked at a non-profit organization and a coffee shop for the first year I was here, and I discovered that I loved to work with coffee. I have just fallen into a wonderful opportunity to take over a coffee shop that was unsuccessful. I am looking forward to turning the shop around, and helping to center a developing neighborhood around a friendly new shop with fantastic coffee.

Business Description

After seeing that a coffee shop in a developing neighborhood had closed, I inquired and found out that all the equipment was available for use, and the landlord was searching for a tenant interested in re-branding the coffee shop and turning it around into a neighborhood asset. I have a long career as a successful barista, and also experience from working in non-profits that centered around community development.

The coffee shop is in a section of town that has been sandwiched between other neighborhoods. Though a busy thoroughfare runs by the location, the shop is still easily accessible by foot and by bicycle, as it is bordered by multiple residential neighborhoods and easily navigable city streets. With it's position at the center of many crossroads, I would love to see the coffee shop become a place from which to navigate the city. To reflect this idea, I have chosen the name "Constellation."

Constellation is in a youthful, vibrant neighborhood that lacks for a space to get together and enjoy delicious espresso. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to start this business and give back to the neighborhood that I am so glad to be a part of.

What is the purpose of this loan?

A portion of the loan funds will go toward start up inventory, such as coffee, milk, and to-go foods, such as pastries and bottled water, and the other portion will go towards making needed renovations to the space, such as painting, installing signage, and getting furniture. This loan will give the business the runway capital it needs to become a successful coffee shop.
