Personal Story

I was raised in Richmond Virginia, but for three years, I lived in Hollywood, California pursuing a career in the entertainment field. I wanted to work in reality television. What brought me out to Hollywood was graduate school where I completed my Masters Degree in Producing Film and Television. Once my studies were complete I began interning at multiple production companies. By the third year I completed my fifth internship and I was at a career crossroads. Do I continue interning and working for free for or do I come home to Richmond and find a full time job that pays well but not in my field?

I had a lot of sleepless nights until one night; I dreamt I had a successful business selling unique leather sandals. I was inspired to follow the dream and see if I could turn it into reality. I drove all over Hollywood collecting inexpensive materials. Once I arrived at home I began the creative process. Thinking this idea could have potential, I began my research online. Coming up short, I couldn't find any products similar to what I had just created.

On March 23, 2012, the ball started rolling on the overall concept, design and management for Soles Citizen, LLC and in May I moved back home to Richmond to live with my parents and focus my time and energy on my new business. I am very grateful for the dream, which lead me to start my own business.

Business Description

Soles Citizen, LLC was created for the practical fashionista! We sell unique sandals with a patent pending zipper pocket in the upper. My purpose in life is to help young women find their perfect "Sole Mate". "My Soles" are designed to do just that.

I started Soles Citizen from a dream I had. From the very beginning I knew this product could help women all around the world. Not only is it fashionable, it's functional. The zipper in the upper which has a pouch allows the mobile fashionista to carry small items such as money, keys and IDs so they don't have to carry around a heavy hand bag.

As a new business owner, one of the biggest challenges I've faced is finding capital to bring my products to market. Currently I have designed 6 prototypes ready and available to manufacture and sell. Marketing the new company is another challenge. The E-commerce site will be our main vehicle to sell to the public. We will market the product by attending shoe trade shows and directly meeting with buyers, advertising on social media, and finally marketing by word of mouth.

Our goal for the future is to expand the line of footwear including casual shoes and boots. Most of the loan will be used to ship the finished product from the manufacturer and the rest of the loan will be used to market the product. I'm excited for fashion savvy fashionistas to try Soles Citizen fashion forward footwear.

What is the purpose of this loan?

Soles Citizen is a new brand of footwear and funds are needed to build a strong platform. The Kiva Zip loan will be used in the following ways:

Shipping Inventory: $2,000
Soles Citizen will allocate the loan to ship the first order of the product from overseas to Virginia. Other fundraising activities are currently in process to raise funds to purchase the inventory.

Aggressive Advertising / Marketing Campaign to the community: $1,500
Will include printed materials such as: brochures, flyers, presentation folders, business cards, postcards, rack cards, loyalty cards, personal stationery, signs, catalogs, direct mail, newsletters, online advertising, outdoor advertising, focus groups.

Website Design: $1,000
Updating the current Soles Citizen website and adding new features, collections new items.

= $5,000

The purchase will provide shipping the inventory from overseas to the United States for the e-commerce site. Going forward we will continue to design new footwear for the collection based on customer feedback. An aggressive advertising campaign will help promote the product and we will continue to develop and upgrade the current website.

The Kiva Zip loan will help fulfill my dreams of becoming a successful business woman. I’d like to reinvest the funds and expand the business as a franchise. My goal is to continue to expand the footwear line. I’d like to give back to the community as well as Kiva Zip borrowers, and support other small business owners. I'd like to donate to charities and non-profits. I’d like Soles Citizen to come become a household brand and expand internationally.

Lacey was profiled by the Richmond Times Dispatch newspaper as an aspiring entrepreneur. The business editor, who was very impressed with her story, called to ask the Director of the Center for comments on women entrepreneurs and whether I liked her product - stylish women's sandals with a cleverly designed zippered pocket that could hold cash and credit cards and a key when I didn't want to carry a pocketbook. I loved them!

My meetings with Lacey to review her business plan, her marketing plan, and her website also impressed me. She is ready to buy the inventory to ramp up her online sales plan. Lacey understands the requirements of repaying the loan and understands the risk of her business venture.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

The KIVA Zip loan will allow Lacey to purchase her initial inventory order. The financial projections show that she will be cash positive by only meeting 50% of her conservative sales forecast. Lacey has surrounded herself with experienced advisors to ensure she will be successful.
