Personal Story

I grew up in Newark, NJ in a loving family with my mother, father and four siblings. I attended Newark local grade schools and graduated from high school. As a child, I worked as a newspaper delivery boy in the mornings before school, and shoeshine boy on weekends. I later attended Rowan University and worked a variety of food and beverage positions to support myself. At the age of 29, I married my first wife Felicia who gave me two sons William and Carey Jr. We were married for more than 18 years when she became ill. After a short battle with Lupus, my wife passed away in late March 2004.

I was devastated. I had two young sons, William about to graduate high school, who excelled as an athlete and Carey Jr. who was about to finish grammar school. I felt lost, confused and was totally unprepared to handle the new responsibilities of being a single parent and sole provider for our family. Although I lost my wife, confidant, best friend, mother of my children, and love of my life, I couldn't give up on my boys. They too had suffered a devastating loss and were looking to me for direction and guidance. This was the most difficult time in my life. However, I held on to what little faith in God I had and my family to just make it through one day at a time.

I decided to fight the depression, sadness, and feelings of defeat and made sure William got into college and Carey Jr. graduated from high school. Somehow, I managed to move on and eventually met and married my current wife Jennifer who helped me to maintain order through this crisis period.

Today, Carey Jr. is in college, William is married and has two sons of his own, and Jennifer and I are currently celebrating our fifth year of marriage.

Business Description

A Taste of Soul Catering LLC operates a home based catering business and specializes in full-service catering and event planning for upscale events in the region. Our business event management team and special event staff are expert at executing weddings, corporate events and banquets. We have established excellent business relationships that have developed into a loyal customer base. A Taste Of Soul Catering LLC. serves both business and private clients in the Tri-State Area which includes New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York and the surrounding areas. Established in August of 1991, Carey Hamilton catered the 29th Birthday Party at the home of Super Bowl Champion NY Giant, Carl Banks. After the birthday celebration was over, Mr. Banks signed a picture for him and said “thanks, for adding the soul to my birthday”. That day A Taste of Soul was born.

A Taste Of Soul Catering has a signature dish called a Collard Green Eggroll. There are four varieties: vegetarian, smoked turkey, BBQ turkey and salmon. We have a hand shake agreement with A&P to bring the Collard Green Eggroll to its hot foods section of six test stores in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. A & P will provide a purchase order for the Collard Green Egg Roll as soon as A Taste Of Soul can deliver on packaging and production. Additionally, Wakefern foods is also considering carrying the Collard Green Egg Roll in its Shop Rite stores.

We are ecstatic about the excitement that our product has generated. Our marketing plan has included event marketing called Soul Tours. We have done twelve events throughout NJ, NY and PA where the Collard Green Egg Roll has been sold to more than 300 customers per event. We have a database of customers, which includes email address and phone numbers.
Our customer base is family-oriented, ingredient savvy and interested in eating great-tasting healthy food.

Our goals are to secure enough capital to produce our product, which will allow us to secure the purchase order from A&P and Wakefern. Then we want to offer our product to area distribution houses like Haddon House and Restaurant Depot.

What is the purpose of this loan?

This loan would allow us to complete the process of producing the Collard Eggroll to be sold to two of the leading Supermarket chains in the country.
We would rent a commercial kitchen, purchase supplies and equipment, and develop packaging at a cost of $3,000.00. The remainder will be spent on marketing and development.

Once we have a commercial kitchen and are in production we can deliver our product and receive purchase orders. Our price point will be .60 at a profit margin of 30%.

These funds will enable us to realize new markets and increase profit margins by at least 100% on a on going basis. This loan will allow us to market the Collard Green Eggroll to specialty stores such as Whole Foods and other food service companies who are looking for new healthy food items.

This loan will be instrumental in helping us realize our dreams. It will allow us to secure space for production and packaging of our product.

Carey's loan is endorsed by The Greater Newark Enterprise Corporation. The information below explains why his trustee thinks Carey is a great candidate for a Kiva Zip loan.
How long have you known this person?

1 year - 3 years

Tell us about your relationship with this borrower.

Carey was originally a student of our 2012 UEDI (Urban Entrepreneurs Development Institute). He never missed a class and was one of the most active students. On the last day of class he brought in his signature product, collard green egg rolls, and it was a hit.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

We have watched Carey steadily move toward his goal of getting his egg rolls in supermarkets for the past year. While we were there to lend a hand whenever necessary, Carey and his wife took the initiative and really got things done on their own. Carey is among the most determined people we have met and continues to work hard every day to make his dreams a reality.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Carey is a caterer but has been working on a special product. The product is a collard green egg roll and its as amazing as it sounds! Even skeptics are turned to believers, all they have to do is try one. While Carey has been working to get his product on store shelves, a Kiva Zip loan would help him cover his packaging research costs, enabling him to pass his final hurdle.
