Personal Story

My name is Fernando and I am originally from Colombia with an architectural design background. Although I had several years of experience in Colombia I have struggled to find employment in that field since my diploma doesn't transfer over. I am a husband and father of four, I have worked various manual labor jobs throughout the last several years to be able to provide for my family. Seeing as I'm not able to pursue my architectural design career, I have decided to focus on my other passion - cooking.

Business Description

In 2012 I opened El Pilon as a food stand at a local Farmer’s Market. El Pilon offers traditional Colombian street food including Empanada, Arepas, and Pan de Yuca. Noticing the demand for my food, I have expanded to a food cart and I am also selling at three local farmer's markets this year. Although a restaurant might be the ultimate goal I believe in taking well calculated steps to get there.

What is the purpose of this loan?

I am seeking to utilize the funds to expand and strengthen my current activities; food cart, food stand at Farmer’s Markets and Catering.

$1,000 will go towards upgrading some of the food cart equipment including the refrigerator and oven.

$500 will be used towards marketing that will include a new menu sign on the food cart, a banner to place at the food stand at the markets and some business cards and catering menus to distribute to expand on the catering business.

$1,000 will be used to purchase some catering equipment, including transportation containers, set up tables and food warmers.
