Personal Story

I grew up in Sheridan, Arkansas, a small town 30 miles south of Little Rock. Throughout grade school, and into high school, my teachers, administrators and peers alike commended my efforts in the arts. In High School, I was frequently encouraged to enter art shows and contests which often produced favorable results. I began to quickly build a resumé of art-related awards and honors, which prompted me to continually devote a substantial amount of time to my development as an artist. After graduating from Sheridan High School in 2008 where I was named a Distinguished Honor Graduate, I attended the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas where I pursued an education in Fine Art. I continued to apply for and receive awards for selections of my personal work. Midway through the Fine Art program, I applied for the competitive Bachelor of Fine Arts Program. Within the Bachelor of Fine Arts course outline, I was able to develop and research aspects of contemporary art that were most relevant to my interests. I am continually fascinated by contemporary nomadic art, and artists who develop efficient living, and/or working spaces. My interest overlaps with the nature of advertising, and the impact that graphic artists can have on the public's perception. My scholarship, combined with an understanding on how contemporary artists use their work as a response to cultural or political issues, sparked a sense of empowerment in my artistic aspirations. Post graduation, I started working at Magna IV Communications in Little Rock. At Magna IV I am constantly learning more about the printing and marketing industries, alike. As I proceed with my career, I desire to start and develop various small businesses (pertaining to art or design) and become a reputable business consultant.

Business Description

Hillcrest Creative, LLC is a design and advertising service. We are focused on promoting small business start-ups, and local initiatives (primarily in Little Rock, Arkansas). Hillcrest Creative, LLC was formed collectively by Hunter Oden and Dylan Yarbrough in February of 2013. The creation of Hillcrest Creative, LLC was a response to personal aspirations of both Hunter Oden and Dylan Yarbrough. Essentially, Hunter and Dylan were close friends who worked in close proximity, and were eager to grow collectively through joint accountability, criticism, and time management. Shortly into the Hillcrest Creative Venture, Greg Warner and Jordan Karpe were added as equal stakeholders and contributors. Later, Michael Hollis was added to the team, hired to account for general business responsibilities.

Hunter Oden is the active Art Director, Dylan Yarbrough is the active Graphic Designer, Greg Warner is the active Technology Evangelist, Jordan Karpe is the active Community Muralist, and Michael Hollis is the active Financial and Business Administrator. Our biggest challenge is accepting that academia doesn't always meet real-world budgets, expectations, and applications in the most favorable manner. Despite our team being comprised of young members, we collectively have industry experience of 12 years.

Our customers are fine artists, galleries, musicians, politicians, and small business owners in the manufacturing, restaurant, editorial, and entertainment industries. In the future, we intend to operate within the constraint of a retrofit 1970's model Volkswagen Camping Van, or Commuter Bus. Within our cost effective mobile office, we have plans to develop an efficient modular workspace that is equipped with the essential equipment necessary to operate as a design and advertising firm (that also pursues community improvement grants via mural projects). We're proud to announce our business intentions, and desire to communicate that our unique mobile office is not only a response to financial efficiency, but also a means by which to make our collective personal goals a reality by making our lifestyles conducive to our career aspirations. We're eager to hit the road, and serve others though creative efforts for profit, non-profit, and free-trade.

What is the purpose of this loan?

Combined with our company's current funds, we will spend one-half of the $5,000 loan on purchasing a 1970's model Volkswagen Camping Van, or Commuter Bus. This purchase would grant us the capstone component of our brand's success. Based on our research, a mechanically and cosmetically sound bus will cost $4,500-$7,000 (plus travel/towing expenses). The remaining $2,500 will be used to optimize the exterior of the bus with our brand standards according to our illustrations and concepts. This will account for Pantone matched paint application, vinyl decals of our website, social media campaign hash tag, and logo and other brand-markings, as well as small cosmetic improvements. We understand that to have a professional appearance in a nontraditional office space, we must present ourselves in a trustworthy and compelling manner. This will expand as our experience and portfolio grows; however, it is immediately impacted by the cleanliness, and sensitive maintenance of our mobile office. We anticipate growing the awareness of our brand no less than 1,000 % in one year as a result of having an established, physical office that serves as a dual brand awareness campaign. This will assist us in achieving the necessary social status to be competitive and develop a growing (and sensibly attained) client-base. With this loan, we will continue to grow organically, but also be able to immediately initiate our strategy, and have the ability and resources to make key decisions in a timely manner.

Hunter's loan is endorsed by University of Central Arkansas Department of Art. The information below explains why his trustee thinks Hunter is a great candidate for a Kiva Zip loan.
How long have you known this person?

3 years - 5 years

Tell us about your relationship with this borrower.

Hunter was a B.F.A. student in our art program. He was a student in one of my classes, and I served as an informal advisor for him throughout his time at the university. He is now a colleague in the local community.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Hunter's reputation in the department was that of an intelligent, hard working young man. He is personable, polite, and determined. During his senior year, I was able to work with him closely as he designed a scholarship flyer for the department that was distributed to high schools throughout the state and handed out to prospective students who visited campus. Hunter's ideas for the flyer were sophisticated, and he was prompt in making suggested changes. Also, his organizational skills became apparent to me as he worked on this project along with other projects AND completing the work for his senior exhibition.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Hunter and his colleagues at Hillcrest Creative are immersed in the community in which they are working, and they are targeting a client base (smaller organizations and companies as well as individuals) that may be overlooked by larger companies. Hunter's organizational skills will be of benefit as he manages his work load and plays several roles in Hillcrest Creative. I think Hunter and his colleagues will be able to overcome any challenges they face through determination and by focusing on the creative environment they are surrounding themselves with in the company and in their personal lives.
