Personal Story

I was born in Russia. I used to live in a small Russian town called Tuapse, but I always felt that there were nicer places in the World with bigger opportunities that I wanted to experience. After moving to Moscow, I realized that I needed to learn English to be able to grow further and take advantage of the great opportunities I had been dreaming of.

Hanging on my bedroom wall was a map of the world that I would look at and think about my next move. As I stared at the map, San Francisco seemed to be the most attractive city for what I wanted. I saved some money for a plane ticket and flew out to California. The first couple of months of my California life were dedicated to living and studying English in San Francisco.

In San Francisco I met a lot of nice people who helped me find places to stay and even helped me to open my own business! I was so excited to bring to America my Russian heritage, my mother’s delicious recipes, my years of culinary experience and create best piroshki (I can definitely say it’s the best piroshki I’ve ever tried.)

I’ve never stopped dreaming and I can finally say that I am living my dream now. I am taking my very first steps of showing the World how great Russian food and Russian people are!

Personal Update - Jun 5, 2013

The last year has been amazing, AйDa Piroshki has been extremely busy and it is wonderful to see it growing. More importantly, being a part of the Kiva community has made me feel extremely supported and I am grateful to the opportunity that I have had in receiving my first loan. I want to thank all of my previous lenders for supporting me on my first loan which has helped me to expand my catering business. It is really exciting to see how many more people try Russian food and get hooked. They immediately enjoy it and come back to get more. I am looking forward to continuing to grow my business and spreading the love for Russian food!

Business Description

Finding myself in the great “Country of Big Opportunities” my mind and heart lead me to the idea of connecting my Russian heritage, years of work in the food industry and desire, to create something awesome in my lifetime. Piroshki was my solution! Why? Because it is something from my motherland, made with simple ingredients, that I truly enjoy making. My business is my passion. It connects my dreams to my home! Piroshki is a hand-held meal that is hearty, warm and filling! Come by and try it for yourself! Let me know what you think!

Business Update - Jun 5, 2013

With my first Kiva Zip loan, I expanded my catering business by purchasing a car that would allow me to make more deliveries. My revenue grew over 20% and I now have at least 2 catering clients a week. Last month, I experienced my busiest month since the start of my business and I have also been able to hire on two more people! It has been amazing to see how much my customers love the Piroshki! With the support of La Cocina and Centro, we are now in the process of opening up a second kiosk location in the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco.

What did you use your last loan for?

Through my first loan with Kiva Zip I was able to purchase a vehicle (Honda CRV) and now am able to do more catering events. My revenues increase by 20%.

What is the purpose of this loan?

This Kiva Zip loan will help me open a second kiosk here in San Francisco. By expanding to a second location in the Haight-Ashbury district where there is much more foot traffic, my business will grow even more and I will be able to bring my food to a bigger market. I will be in a shared community marketplace which will also help attract new customers. Through this expansion, I will be creating new job opportunities by hiring on a delivery person and additional staff.

Anna's loan is endorsed by Centro Community Partners. The information below explains why her trustee thinks Anna is a great candidate for a Kiva Zip loan.

Endorsement for this loan

How has the borrower's personal life and business changed since receiving a Kiva Zip loan?

Anna has continued to work hard and has been successful in expanding her catering business. We are excited that she was able to get the vehicle to expand her business and has gotten another step closer to her dream. She has also been able to create new job opportunities while continuously supporting the development of her staff and other young entrepreneurs.

Over the last year, Anna has been able to prove that her vision can become a reality. WIth a deeper understanding of managing and running her business, she has developed the skills to grow and expand her business. Anna has refined her processes to a point where opening AйDa Piroshki in different locations will be well run and unique in each neighborhood.

Why are you recommending this borrower for another loan?

Centro and La Cocina - two organizations Anna has been working with continuously with are joint endorsing this loan to enable the expansion of AйDa Piroshki, She is a wonderful, talented business woman and this second loan will enable her to open up the second location in the Haight-Ashbury district where she will hire on two additional employees. She was on time with all of her monthly repayments with her previous Kiva Zip loan and was great at communicating with her lenders.

Her dream is to one day bring her tasty piroshkis to all the neighborhoods of San Francisco. After working with Anna for the last two years, we can attest to the quality of her food, passion, and work ethic. La Cocina and Centro fully endorseme Anna for this Kiva Zip loan.

We met Anna in 2010, when our founder, Arturo Noriega, was invited to lead a workshop on financial literacy at La Cocina. He was impressed with her energy and eventually her delicious piroshki!

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Anna is a responsible, reliable and intelligent business owner – not to mention an incredibly talented cook! Her passion for her business is evident by her loyal customer base and delicious product. She has an impressive thread of rave reviews for Anda Piroshki on Yelp! and we are confident that with the combination of her unbeatable product and undeniable entrepreneurial spirit, her business will continue flourish!

Please describe how a Kiva Zip loan to this Borrower will have a significant and positive social impact on their life.

This loan will allow Anna to purchase a larger vehicle so that she can extend the catering aspect of her business. The increase in income and exposure from catering will ultimately help her to reach her main goal of growing her business into a more permanent and larger operation.

Please describe why this Borrower is requesting a loan from Kiva, as opposed to a traditional loan.

It is difficult for entrepreneurs and startups of such a small size to access traditional loans. Requesting a Kiva Zip loan is an incredible opportunity for entrepreneurs, such as Anna, to take their small businesses to the next level.

What are the challenges that you expect this borrower to face in repaying their loan?

Once she receives her Kiva Zip loan, Anna will need to focus on continuing to grow the number of catering clients, while also maintaining attention on her retail clients. If she does run into real trouble, she will have the option of selling her vehicle to cover her debt.
