Personal Story

I was born in San Antonio, Texas, to parents that had met, fell in love and married while stationed at Fort Hood. My mom was a Texas native of Mexican ancestry, and my father from rural Michigan. When I was three we moved to the Flint area where I've lived ever since. As a high school freshman my band started playing shows at Flint Local 432, an all-ages concert venue in downtown Flint. Through that I met the owners of the Flint City T-Shirt Company and started working there, staying for nine years. Along the way I bought a house and graduated from Mott Community College with an Associate’s Degree with honors in Business Management. Eventually I realized my opportunity for personal and professional growth had reached its limit at the T-shirt shop. I wanted to find a new firm and grow as a designer, but the job market was very soft in Genesee County. I received offers in cities like Saginaw and Okemos, but, wanting to stay in the Flint area, started to gravitate towards self-employment as an option. With encouragement from other entrepreneurs, including those working in the creative economy, I began writing a business plan. That led to securing start-up funds from an angel investor who had invested in Flint City T-Shirts previously, and Mark 3 was born. Currently my business is operated off an Ikea desk in my spare bedroom, but within the next year I plan to move into a space in downtown Flint.

Business Description

Mark 3 Graphic Design is a graphic design studio focusing on brand identity, promotional items and garment design. I am currently active in several different markets, including working with high schools, event promotions, start-up businesses, churches, local bands, book layouts, and board game prototype design. I decided to go into business for myself when I had grown as much as possible at my previous job, and all other job opportunities in my field required relocation out of Genesee County. A friend of mine who owns a business lettering comic books suggested I look into starting my own business from home. I did the research, wrote a business plan, and spoke to an investor at previous company. He knew my work ethic, liked my business plan, and decided to invest. The entire process took about six months to finalize. I started this business because I love what I do, and because I know I have the drive to succeed. I live a very responsible life, and I would never have made the jump to owning my business and putting my financial livelihood in jeopardy if I didn't know I was going to be successful. My biggest challenge is getting my name out to new clientele, and standing out among the crowd of high end design firms as well as bottom line freelancers. Some goals moving forward in business are to repay all debt and start turning a consistent profit, as well as move into an office in Downtown Flint and become a more visible positive influence in the community. My company now works closely with the Flint based non-profit Red Ink Flint, has been a sponsor for the Buckham Alley Fest, and is currently working with the Sloan Auto Fair on a promotional package for this year’s event.

What is the purpose of this loan?

This loan will be to increase my operating capital, allowing me to continue upgrading hardware, software, licenses and supplies, while I grow my business. Having enough capital on-hand allows me to take on larger projects that have a significant delay between starting and payment, bid on governmental contracts that require all work to be done up-front, allow me to do new kinds of work, and generally put me on more even footing with larger firms. Overall I will see improved cash-flow and profitability, allowing me to repay the loan.
