Personal Story

My name is Kala Santrese Wilburn, born and raised in Flint, MI for most of my life. I also spent some of my childhood years in Atlanta, Georgia. Both experiences helped me to understand the real meaning of perseverance, inspiration and hard work. Growing up in Flint, there were not many resources for youth exposure to artful careers like fashion design. We grew up with BIG imaginations which would take us way beyond our circumstances. This helped me to discover that dreams were meant to be lived.

My grandfather, Willie Ben Anthony, Sr. taught me how to use the sewing machine at the age of eleven. I went on to create custom costumes for local talent shows and later went on to study Apparel Design and Merchandising at Central Michigan University. My college experience allowed me to experience all the fashion capitals of the world – London, Paris, Milan, Barcelona and New York City. This enables me to continue to see beyond the violence and challenges of every day life in Flint, MI.

My dreams for the future are to not just to be a Fashion Architect of apparel and accessories, but also to dress consumers from the inside out! My collections will allow consumers to be chic and stylish while being built with confidence through developing inner beauty. I also want to continue to educate smaller communities about art, fashion and the many opportunities in the industry.

Business Description

Fannie Lucille is a handbag and apparel collection that focuses on customizing individuals from the inside out. Fannie Lucille is a custom made apparel and accessories collection that enhances sporty silhouettes with luxurious techniques and fabrics. We create seasonal collections while also focusing on creating custom items for unique consumers who believe in customization.

Fannie Lucille was started in January of 2012 in Flint, MI officially. I started creating custom backpacks for clients in New York City as a hobby in the early beginnings. I worked as a Shoe Salesperson and noticed that many women would come in our location and ask for bags that were sporty as Nike, but chic as Rebecca Minkoff. It seemed as if this market was untapped for women in transit motion. My client asked me to make a custom backpack for him and from there Fannie Lucille was established.

I decided to start Fannie Lucille as a business because it encompassed all of my passions – design, entrepreneurship, inspiration and challenge. I also wanted to build an empire that would help the local community to evolve and give others hope to press toward the dream mark. My biggest challenges have been production because with one volunteer and myself as the production team, it gets to be a little overwhelming with the increase in orders. My customers are men/women in motion who enjoy life and value unique and custom pieces.

Our goal for the near future of Fannie Lucille is to develop our production line from custom to producing small collections bi-annually. This will enable us to have a faster turn around time and service more customers around the world. Eventually we want to develop a manufacturing factory in Michigan that will help us to perfect our manufacturing process.

What is the purpose of this loan?

With this loan we will be able to buy fabric and trims to create our first collection of handbags and apparel. We will also use the money to have patterns and samples created and increase production numbers for each collection. The increase number of product will help us to become involved in more vendor events and have placement in boutiques around the world.

Fannie Lucille will not only have product but the money to create a look book for boutique owners and consumers around the world to see and choose product to feature and buy. This will allow us to drive and increase sales on website, social media and in boutiques. Once we continue to build and acquire more brand awareness we are hoping that this will enable us to have a fashion house of our own.
