Personal Story

I was born in 1952 in a family of 5 siblings. I can't even remember when my parents died because I was very young. I was brought up by my relatives. That's the resaon as to why I did not proceed with my education because of lack of school fees. My husband died 10 years ago and I have three children, the last born is in class eight and my first born has his own family.

Business Description

My business is making the energy saving stove liners that I sell to the blacksmith who manufacture the stoves.I started this business so that I could complement my income.

What is the purpose of this loan?

This loan will be used for building a shed for storing pre-baked cook stove liners. This will help me in producing more liners.

Ludia's loan is endorsed by GVEP International (Global Village Energy Partnership). The information below explains why her trustee thinks Ludia is a great candidate for a Kiva Zip loan.
What is your relationship with the Borrower?

He is an entreprenuer in a program called DEEP (Developing Energy Enterprises Project) that is being implemented by GVEP International.

How did you meet the Borrower?

She has been in our DEEP program since 2009.

How long have you known the borrower?

2 years

Why are you endorsing this Borrower?

She has no access to financial services in her area since the only formal financial institution has stopped lending to micro entreprenuers and is now focusing on high tier enterpreneurs.

What are the challenges that you expect this borrower to face in repaying his / her loan?

During the rainy season, production of improved cook stoves is slowed down.

Please describe the due diligence you have done to ensure that the business plans of this Borrower are sound:

This entrepreneur has undergone business plan development training. He has also developed a business plan through the business mentoring program. The entreprenuer has been supported by his business mentor to perfect and implement the business plan.

Why do you think this Borrower has the "character" to repay this loan?

She is diligent and hardworking. She is a member of Mwangaza Self Help Group and an opinion leader in her local area.

Please describe how a Kiva Zip loan to this Borrower will have a significant and positive social impact:

The loan will help her to stabilize her cash flow and increase production. She will train more women on how to make improved cook stove liners and thereby create new employment.

What do you think will happen to the Borrower in the event of default? i.e. What are the risks to the Borrower's life?

GVEP International works with field based mentors on the ground to ensure on time repayments. It is hoped that the mentors will walk with the entreprenuers to ensure that the businesses are running well in order to repay. In the unfortunate event of default GVEP will work with the borrower to make sure that the business continues such that loan repayments may be realized through business mentors, technology mentors and business development coordinators.

Please describe why this Borrower is requesting a loan from Kiva, as opposed to a traditional loan?

She has no access to formal financial services since the only one operating in the area stopped giving microfinance loans.
