Personal Story

My name is Liz and I'm the founder of Ecodeo ( e-kod-ee-o), a new digital media firm that focuses on storytelling for a sustainable future. Ecodeo has three meanings: Eco, Code, & Video. Simply put - we make an impact by amplifying climate justice campaigns, conscious consumerism, eco products, smart promote energy, product and transportation solutions, and eco advocacy campaigns through video production and overall outreach strategy.

Prior to Ecodeo, I worked as a contractor/ freelance filmmaker for 15 years behind a camera in broadcast TV, Film, Advertising and documentary. I founded Ecodeo because I can't believe (and still cant' believe) how slowly climate change initiatives and sustainable options are happening (even though all the renewable and power saving technology we need is here). Every single day, there are new sustainable innovations, eco-inventions, eco-product designs, eco-transit , clean tech, clean energy solutions, technologies and policies born and most of the population is not adapting. We must cut our carbon levels by 2 degrees to even have a chance at surviving as a species and that means we all must make lifestyle changes and be hyper aware of resources we use. Trends indicate the younger generations are more socially responsible. There can't be enough media.. in my opinion that helps us get toward a sustainable future.

Business Description

Ecodeo is a digital media firm that creates video solutions for sustainable brands, environmental organizations, eco products, clean energy, transit, technology producers and eco-innovators around the world.

We create cinematic storytelling, advertising, films, communications and short-form documentaries focused on impact, innovation & sustainable development. Ecodeo’s authentic stories aim to foster greater corporate and personal accountability. We amplify sustainable solutions toward a more climate stabilized future.

Two career highlights prior to founding Ecodeo.

1) I was a Director of Photography's of ‘Off the Grid: Life on the Mesa’: about a no-mans land in New Mexico is an award-winning documentary that sold to Sundance, (available on Netflix) and it was praised by Variety for the the film’s “stunning look”.

2) I worked on President Obama's Re-election 2012 campaign for 15 months on the National Digital team where the video content reached 288 million viewers and our impactful video content helped win the election. .

What is the purpose of this loan?

Up till now, we've produced most non profit, NGO and foundation content at cost since most non-profits do not have the resources for full cost media, communications and outreach. We still have overhead, expenses and operating costs to cover and therefore need seed funds.

All has been out of pocket, bootstrapped for two years! We don't have loads of available credit and am not able at this time to take out a business loan due to high student loans and living expenses.

Although, we are growing and scaling - its' not enough revenue yet to scale. Scale means being able to afford proper legal help, taxes, insurance.

1) Software, Online memberships, networking costs and tax and business fees $300/ mo+

2) Business Iinsurance and Legal $2500 year +

3) The remainder will be a buffer to pay a freelancers faster than we often get paid or for networking fees, event costs. Overhead, a buffer and being able to afford very part-time core team members. It is too hard to continue working only with contractors. Many folks want to help me grow the company but, need some very part time compensation to help.

Critical for us: having a small financial buffer seems to be the only way we can take on low-budget clients with socially positive messages in order to work with some of the most innovative think tanks, foundations and nonprofits that do not have much of a budget for video and communications content.

I have not been taking a salary to launch this company at the moment and end up taking on the contractor roles for each client jobs to pay myself and believe me, it's minimal. I obv freelance as well to pay the bills and to be able to bootstrap Ecodeo but, after this loan is paid off, I seek 10k+ in seed funds now so we can properly scale the company. We have almost paid this off and hope you will therefore enjoy seeing how KIVA ZIP helped us grow up till this point and we hope folks in this community will support our next loan we apply for so we can really grow and in order to make a significant impact out there.

The borrower and I are colleagues, friends and collaborators. We've known another for 6-7 years. We are in touch a few times a month usually.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Liz Rubin is motivated, ambitious, creative, resourceful and committed to the mission of her startup- sustainability. She is a creative soul with ecopreneur leanings. She is curious and interested in everything and fun to be around. I am endorsing her for a Kiva Zip Loan because I know it will really help her grow her business and she really needs the resources. I think her background as a creative in online media, broadcast , documentary and advertising will be a huge asset to the Social Good movement, especially in the sustainability markets and initiatives. Her camera gear was stolen last year while she was working tirelessly on the Obama Campaign and she needs startup funds to be able to build video content, and to cover some basic startup costs. I am endorsing her because I trust her to be responsible, make great work while resourceful and economical and use the funds for the most possible impact.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

The borrower's business, Ecodeo will create video content for the public and private sector in order to amplify sustainable markets and environmentally sustainable policies. The social impact will be that they will help foudations, organizations, NGO's, .orgs , corporations, scientists, engineers, institutes, clean energy and product producers tell the story of their positive impact. In short, Ecodeo will help elevate sustainable markets and conscious consumerism. This will greatly affect Liz's life. She's been a creative, working in media for over a dozen years and wants to make more of a difference. At first, finding paying clients and covering the cost of producing the content will be hard to overcome but, I trust Liz will manage the business well.
