Personal Story

My name is Liz; I am digital video producer, cinematographer, filmmaker and new ecopreneur. I am the founder of Ecodeo ( e-kod-ee-o). Ecodeo has three meanings: Eco, Code, & Video. Simply put - we aim to make an impact by elevating conscious consumerism, eco products, smart promote energy, product and transportation solutions, and eco advocacy campaigns through digital video production and strategy.

I worked on President Obama's Re-election 2012 campaign for 15 months on the National Digital team where the video content reached 288 million viewers. After the campaign, I founded ecodeo because I grew frustrated with how slowly climate change initiatives and eco-products and options were hitting the market. Every single day, there are new sustainable innovations, eco-inventions, eco-product designs, eco-transit , clean tech, clean energy solutions, technologies and policies born. Most of the population is not only not really hearing about it, but, not shown options in how to make these greener choices. The climate change initiatives and digital video work around the environment that I worked on are partially what inspired me to launch Ecodeo. I came off the campaign feeling like I can't move fast enough to create content about this stuff.

Even though our global carbon is now way above 350, most people are not aware of how nor are in the habit of making sustainable choices in their everyday activities. Folks simply aren't often exposed to these lower carbon impact options in stores, when they get take out, in their transportation or home options. There simply isn’t enough media content, and information about how to make these greener choices in our everyday lives.

Prior to starting Ecodeo, I spent more than a dozen years behind the camera - working freelance in broadcast, film, entertainment and media for wide variety of different syndicated networks, production companies and ad agencies . I no longer could accept that my work in media wasn't really helping the world, even though it was fun at times. I moved into documentary and social good circles. I have been shooting socially good projects, documentaries and advocacy projects since.

Business Description

Ecodeo creates video content for the public and private sector in order to amplify sustainable markets and environmentally sustainable policies. We help foundations, organizations, corporations, institutes, clean energy producers tell the story of their positive impact!

We are focused on foundations, corporations, .orgs, policy-makers, clean energy and transit producers as well as with eco-product designers. We help eco-minded policies and product makers tell the story of their positive impact through digital video production and digital strategy. We aim to to“amplify” eco brands, eco products, and eco policies towards a positive impact.

Video and digital video strategy is the absolute most impactful and fast way to reach consumers and audiences quickly and emotionally. This is my background and why I started the company. We seek social good minded investors and new clients. We are 7 months old and already working with our second client. We intend to become a B Corp.

Ecodeo just produced 12 videos for different NGO's/ organizations on a shoestring budget that aired at the UN in Geneva, Switzerland - all about sustainability.

Two career highlights prior to founding Ecodeo.

- Liz shot a good portion of ‘Off the Grid: Life on the Mesa’: about a no-mans land in New Mexico is an award-winning documentary that sold to Sundance, (available on Netflix) and it was praised by Variety for the the film’s “stunning look”.

- Liz creative produced and shot two Anti-smoking commercials for the NY Board of Health which won two Telly Awards.

What is the purpose of this loan?

We are a startup with no startup funds!

All has been out of pocket, bootstrapped. We are broke. We don't have loads of available credit and am not able at this time to take out a business loan due to high student loans and living expenses.

Although, we are working with our second client, it's not enough revenue yet to pay the bills and build the business.

1) Green cloud storage, online membershipts, networking costs and some basic legal, tax and business fees $1000

2) Off-set replacement costs video equipment ( stolen last year on campaign trail ) and cover insurance for that gear - $3500

3) The remainder will be a buffer to pay a freelancers faster than we often get paid or for networking fees, event costs. $500

Critical for us: having a small financial buffer seems to be the only way we can take on low-budget clients with socially positive messages in order to work with some of the most innovative think tanks, foundations and nonprofits that do not have much of a budget for video and communications content.

I am not taking a salary to launch this company at the moment and am giving it a little more time, although tricky and risky. I freelance and teach and do odd jobs to pay the bills but, seek funds now so all doesn't have to keep coming out of basic living expenses. Please support our mission! We will absolutely return the loan and it's an investment you can feel 100% good about.

She is curious and interested in everything and fun to be around. I am endorsing her for a Kiva Zip Loan because I know it will really help her grow her business and she really needs the resources. I think her background as a creative in online media, broadcast , documentary and advertising will be a huge asset to the Social Good movement, especially in the sustainability markets and initiatives. Her camera gear was stolen last year while she was working tirelessly on the Obama Campaign and she needs startup funds to be able to build video content, and to cover some basic startup costs. I am endorsing her because I trust her to be responsible, make great work while resourceful and economical and use the funds for the most possible impact.
