Personal Story

First introduced to the field of building science and energy efficiency working with the Clinton Climate Initiative's Home Energy Affordability Loan program (HEAL) and AmeriCorps from 2010-2011, we audited and retrofitted dozens of homes, primarily for low-moderate income Arkansans.

Born in Little Rock, my family transplanted to the Washington, D.C. area, where I grew up. Moving back to Arkansas in 2008, I found myself at home in the strong community of entrepreneurs and innovators here. It's a privilege to be a part of the revitalization and renaissance currently underway here and in cities across the country and around the world.

Business Description

Working with the Home Energy Solutions program from Entergy Arkansas, we're able to offer our services to customers at no charge, often times benefiting those who need it the most. Specifically, services currently offered include detailed home inspection, diagnostics including blower door and duct blaster testing, and comprehensive energy modeling.

Benefits of the work we do include identifying and reducing energy loss, resulting in lower energy use, lower energy costs, fewer emissions and a healthier environment in the home and beyond. Whether changing light bulbs, adding insulation, sealing leaks or identifying and re-mediating potential hazards, we're able to have a positive impact on peoples lives everyday.

How long have you known this person?

1 year - 3 years

Tell us about your relationship with this borrower.

Daniel Johnson is an energy auditor who has volunteered his time and equipment to help with an energy efficiency improvement project at one of our mission project sites - the Pettus House on the campus of the Vera Lloyd Children's Home in Monticello, Arkansas - an orphanage for abused children.

Tell us about this borrower's personality and character, and why you are endorsing him or her for a Kiva Zip loan.

Daniel is trained and skilled, but also patient with low-skill volunteers. He started his own company - Innovation Energy Arkansas. He went to Monticello with our mission team (2 hours away) four times. He also shopped with us to buy the correct materials for the job. He volunteered four days of his valuable time to help his neighbors in need. He used his own tools. He has a heart for mission work.

Tell us about this borrower's business, and why you believe a Kiva Zip loan will contribute to his or her success.

Daniel is now a one-man operation but has the potential to provide energy audits and energy efficiency improvements for many more clients. If he could purchase another vehicle and more equipment, he could hire at least one more person - thereby impacting the Arkansas economy in a positive way.
